Seagulla and girls. K5 AFC

Went out today with the intent to test again the AFC of the K5.

I took loads of seagull shots and here is one sequence of a bird coming towards me then turning right and flying diagonally away. Taken at 2.8 and all near 100% crops, the birds were a pretty small target in this set. So they are soft because the Sigma 70-200 is soft wide open especially at 200 mm.

Then I co-opted a couple of nice girls to run towards me as fast as they could. Seems like the K5 can handle action.

All shot on continuous hi and focus priority. As I said before I am not a schooled action shooter so the three action shots OOF might be my fault. I cropped the seagull shots from the frame so they represent a decent crop from a full image.

Thanks telfish for these shots. I know for a fact my K20D could not do this. Looks like you got mostly keepers.

They are here and all in focus. The last one was right at the MFD of the lens. Having reviewed all the shots I did today and there are about 400 the keeper rate (for in focus) is roughly 95% maybe better. The seagull sequence I posted was the worst for OOF shots, sequences where the birds were traveling parallel to me were pretty near all in focus. All the sequences of the girls are in focus even ones taken at 2.8.

Busy foregrounds or backgrounds with the birds can confuse the AF which was set on 5 point. I am guessing if you had the skill to keep center AF on a bird it might be better in busy situations.

These results are great. Thanks for taking the time and effort to do these.

The last set is very similar to the kind of 'AF torture tests' done by these guys on Canon and Nikon bodies. Looks like the K-5 will be able to handle similar testing and do OK.

I am glad to see that you actually posted the ones that Missed. Still, the best I've been able to do is about 5 shots total of a randomly moving object and 2 - 3 of those are hit or miss at best. That's with both the K20 and the K7, both of which, I consider to be very capable machines. I'm convinced enough to know I'll be buying a K5. Not it's just a matter of stock, and price.
