Has anyone compared Olympus E-5 with Pentax K-5?

seeing that their pricing not to mention the model name is similar, what do you think?

E-5 is a match for k-7, not k-5.

Olympus just tries to get as much cash as they can from a dying system's loyalists

Sadly for olympus users of the 4/3 system, that kind of sums up the picture right now. m4/3, and some form of adapting the standard 4/3 lenses in a higher end m4/3 body are likely going to be the future for Oly.

E-5 is only for those who have some top of the line Oly glass. No new investers to my opinion.

There have been reports floating around the Olympus community of comments by Oly officials that the E-5 may be the last, or one of the last 4/3 DSLRs they make. Is so, apparently they feel that 4/3 is not profitable for them enough to justify the cost of keeping them in development/manufacturing, as opposed to putting those resources into micro 4/3.

As it stands, the E-5 definitely does not represent 3 years worth of development over the E-3, and is underspecced and overpriced compared to the competition. Oly seems to be just trying to make a quick buck from diehard loyalists.

One can argue this applies to the existing Pentax system as well. Pentax have unique Limited primes and average zooms, Olympus have awesome zooms but few primes. Both have crippled bodies in different ways and uncertain future.

Sadly they overestimated the position of 4/3 and tried to outdo Canon/Nikon with their super expensive and oversized pro lenses and bodies. The promised 4/3 advantages never really materialized until m4/3. What a shame. You have to give them credit for being innovative through which Pentax lack.

?

Not sure how Oly was innovative compared to Pentax. They did have the bravado to call their top cameras "professional" which Pentax doesn't bother to do.

The big difference is, Oly have announced that the E-5 is basically the "end of the road." So it really is dying. I think Pentax's K-r and K-5 are going to be very succesful cameras, just like the K-x and K-7.

Being "innovative" on the lens mount is unwise IMHO. Pentax made the right decision by staying with the K-mount so that those of us with old glass could continue to use same and so that newcomers can discover, appreciate and use the old gems. On the surface a bad decision perhaps because it reduces Pentax' revenue from selling new glass, but it does secure a decent amount of customers and Pentax can't be suffering that much having been able to develop and introduce the 645D (which still maintains glass compatibility with the old 645's).

Not yet. But the danger exists that eventually, the Pentax system arrives at the same sad point. A point where a sensor can be too small to keep up SLR sales and the vendor leaves the SLR camp.

Kannataako se PENTAXia sitten hankkiakaan jos täytyy muita merkkejä haikailla. Yli 30 vuotta Pentaxin omistajana, merkkiä en vaihda vaikka toimituksissa saqisi olla parantamisenvaraa.

... that translation module sure does throw up some curious stuff

The E-5 looks like just a warmed over previous generation camera.

The problem is that a lot Olympus users at that level are thousands of $$ into their lens system, so it feels like a trap with no escape...
