so what's the verdict on DXO? it's good if it shows good scores for your camera and it's bad if it doesn't?
My understanding is that those who can read the graphs believes in them, those who only reads the final score don't. I'm a believer.

I am a little confused. I am ordering the k-5 next week but the scores show the nikon and canon beating the k-5 in iso. Nikon over twice as much.
I am a little confused why the score is higher than the others?

What? People just complained it didn't have a better mark than the K-x. It's still among the best APS-C cameras ever made, according to DxO. The APS-C top 8, grouped by score, are:

Pentax K-5: 82

Sony A55: 73
Nikon D90: 73

Nikon D5000: 72
Pentax K-x: 72
Pentax K-r: 72

Sony A33: 70
Nikon D300s: 70

that's good news for the k5.

the kr had a bad or not so good mark by DXO

what i don't understand is folks are singing high praises for the k5 and rightfully so and no one is bashing DXO, but with the results of the kr being where it's at, folks bash DXO.

so what's the verdict on DXO? it's good if it shows good scores for your camera and it's bad if it doesn't?

kr and kx are performing pretty well better than 7d and d300...
what do u expect the kr to be the best performing camera...the two camera share similar sensor.

DxOmark have their own testing methodology wrt sports ISO. This means that when looking at the actual photos, you may actually feel that the K5 may have a better high ISO performance.

what surprises me is some folks reaction to the kr DXO numbers.

yes, we all expect it to be better than the kx, but some reaction like "don't believe DXO, it's garbage"

now, with the K5, "all right! DXO numbers for k5 are great!" excellent.

well, as someone else mentioned, it's human nature.

They beat it in ISO, not in overall score. Nikon D700 and Canon EOS 5D Mark II are full frame cameras, and yet the K-5 beats them (except for ISO). Just check out the prices of the D700 and 5D Mark II.
I'd say, this definitely is a feat of Pentax engineering. Hurrray for Pentax!

I wouldn't worry too much about that. Look at the DR scores, the K-5 is better than or equal to the 5dMkII and the D700 at every ISO, and beats them to dust at low ISO. Only the S/N rate is slightly lower than for the D700 and 5DMk II, but not at ISO 3200 and higher.

DxO should always be taken with a pinch of salt, however that doesn't take away from the K-5 and Pentax's huge achievement with this camera. Remember, the Nikon D3 is over three years old now and sensor development has come a long way so this excellent performance doesn't come as a total surprise.

Given the full frame rivaling performance of this sensor, it does make one wonder what Canikon have up their sleaves for their next FF offerings (1DS Mk4, D800, D4X and 5D Mk3) as they are likely to be absolutely superb. Nikon won't let it's D7000 trump every other APS-C and FF body they have, so the semi-pro and pro bodies will need to move up a notch in performance.

Because the Canon & Nikon APS-C cameras have been left in the Rear-View mirror.

What I don't understand is how did Pentax get the K-5 perform significantly higher than the A55, which shares the same sensor ?
Of course, there is still post-sensor signal processing and software-driven tweaking....Pentax engineers may have some additional mojo up their sleeves....or did Sony pay a significant downside for its semi-transparent mirror ?

Some of the results directly validate the good testing that dgaies and johnbee have been doing. I remember one of them said specifically that at 12800, the noise seems better on k-5 than a D700. And thats exactly what the SNR curve is saying.
