Have you considered the D7000?

The price/quality ratio is unbeatable, IMO.

The sensor seems to be the same as in K5 so you get the new sensor tech with all advantages of the Nikon system.

BUT, if you foresee using the camera in harsh conditions (rain, snow, cold) or you like using mostly small primes, Pentax is a better option.

Yes, I find Nikon colors grossly harsh. Thats because it's the our brains sees it not the eyes. I mean it's a very subjective area how we see the things. Once I showed one of my relatives Canon and Nikon prints and he has chosen the Pentax, I've never undesrtood. Than it danged to my mind it was a subjective choice. BTW I am a Neurophysiologist and fairly know vision.

being an ex-Nikon shooter, I won't say that it's grossly harsh but rather hecka solid or strong color. this may work for some people, and some not. for me personally it was ok. but I do admit that I prefer the Pentax colors. and Yes, Canon Colors do look constipated.

Seeing as you have not had a DSLR before, what have you enjoyed with the camera you currently own? If you don't own any camera, what subjects do you expect to find interest in?

Examples:
- people, landscape (wide angle), small objects (macro), urban, sporting events, ...

PENTAX FA 31mm F1.8 Limited (or on the cheap.. the new 35mm f2.4)

PENTAX DA Star 60-250mm F4 ED (IF) SDM
memory cards
one large bag that can fit say 4-6 "things"
one small bag that can fit only a body and lens

I'd rather zoom with my feet for the most part.

Honestly, I'd take the DA* 300mm and a few others over the 60-250mm ( have a DA* 300 and like it a lot...), but I'm trying to be somewhat reasonable on price. The 60-250mm is a solid and sharp lens.

I didn't think I would get that much of a response here. I want to thank everyone for their input. I guess you really can't go wrong with either type of camera.

Both of these are excellent. If you want a reason to choose one or the other, then you have to be specific on what your priorities are:

If you are shooting in low-light people or things that move, go for the D700 for its high-ISO and full-frame sensor which gives it and advantage exactly in those conditions. Also, based on your selection, you won't have to change lenses which will help when you need to work fast under certain conditions, like for weddings where people move and you want to switch between overall shots and detail shots.

If you want to print large images and precisely frame your subjects, go for the K-5. The K-5 has more resolution which at low-ISO settings will mean you can print larger. Also the K-5's viewfinder shows 100% of your view and so you won't have unexpected things show up along the edges of your frame.

Remember, choosing a camera is always relative your needs! There is no one-size-fits-all.

Why not a d700 with a kr?

Fit an UWA on d700 and a limited prime let's say 43 or 77 on kr..that would give u everything u ever need.
Be noted that 77 is considered as a medium telephoto prime when Its focal length is multiplied by 1.5.

At the end, u will be a pentanikonian who owns both systems with access to all the lenses from both brands.

i've had a chance to play with both the K5 and the D700. i found that the D700 is a fabulous camera albeit being older technology when it comes to the Nikon bodies. But anyway, i decided to go with the Pentax K5 only because i found the D700 too heavy to be lugging around.
Seriously, you could knock somebody out cold if you swing the D700 to his/her head.

And yes Virginia, the K-5 SMOKES the D700! I've shot both and processed and printed from both and it's been my personal experience. Believe what you want at you're own risk.
