All I can say is WOW. If a photo job I have lined up for mid Jan works out as well as I hope I will have my K-5 by the first of Feb.

Indeed outstanding!

Now I wonder if anybody can advise whether K5 highlights can be recovered as much as the shadows in Jeff's shot? Anyone with K5 hands-on?

Thanks,
Zig

Nope, according to different test shots on the web, most of the K5 amazing dynamic range comes from clean shadows. The highlights performance is comparable to Samsung sensor in K7/K20D. But, not problem at all. Just leave more room for highlights and recover shadows in PP.

You know what just occurred to me? The K-5 is going to be considered a spy's camera. Underexpose 4 stops producing a near uniformly black photo if the outputted JPEG is viewed by unwanted eyes. But load the RAW and increase exposure by 4 stops and maybe bump the light fill and contrast level if necessary and you disclose the clean hidden photo of some sensitive top secret subject matter.

Hi Jeff,

I would really like to pixel peep the original underexposed raw file. It would be great if you could post here for a short while.

Best Regards
Patrick

I was outside taking photos for the SIN game and some of my photos came out a little underexposed (entirely my fault, not the camera). Normally, I'd consider this shot junk and send it to the scrap bin. However,

Camera Pentax K-5
Exposure 0.002 sec (1/640)
Aperture f/5.6
Focal Length 85 mm
ISO Speed 80
Exposure Bias 0 EV
Flash Off, Did not fire

This is pushed 3 stops and has had the fill light boosted to about 75% in ACR... Go ahead and click the fixed picture to pixel peep if you wish.. There Is a slight amount of NR applied in ACR but normally something like this would be unserviceable.

Pretty impressive... To me anyway.

This is the kind of thing only a total nerd could get excited about, but wow - it's like magic!

Photoshop CS3 ACR, as bright as I can make it:

Full size version is here, slightly noisy at 100% after sharpening but nothing problematic.

Reading this forum is expensive, I really really want a K5 now.

That is absolutely amazing! Thanks for posting it, but not for upping my CBA.
