Pentax K5 (Now Lenses???)

I posted a thread last week asking which way should I go K5 or D700 and I decided to go with the K5. It should be here in a few days. My question now is....

What lenses should I buy??? Suggestions and Opinions will be greatly appreciated.

This is what I will be shooting..

Indoor Events - Weddings, Parties, Church Events
Outdoor Events - Zoo, Vacation Trips, Parades, Wildlife.

I was thinking for indoors either the 16-50mm DA* or 17-70mm. Which is the better choice?

DA*16-50, DA*50-135, 55-300 (assuming you want light gear for travel...if not the DA*60-250)...

I'd go with the 60-250 over the 50-135. The latter's zoom range isn't very convenient IMO, and it's certainly not long enough for outdoor events.

How is that 17-70?? or would you go with the 16-50mm and give up 20mm?

I disagree, a lot of users here with a 50-135 use that most among their lenses. It is one of the best midrange zooms Pentax makes.

And I would go with the 16-50 just to pair up two water seal soulmates.

I agree if the OP is going to be shooting a lot out doors, on the other hand I would say that the DA 50-135 is much lighter and good for indoor events and capturing closeups at weddings etc... in the latter case I would add the 55-300 as my outdoor lens.... this lens is well priced and gives great results

Let me ask you a question. Do you find yourself switching lens when taking pics at a wedding? I would say between the 16-50mm and 50-135mm.

My wedding/event kit does not include zooms.
So, I'll be the oddball that suggests DA15LTD, DA21ltd, DA35LTD, DA*55/1.5 and A70LTD.
The 60-250 has been a very good performer for me, but if I could trade it for a 105LTD and 150LTD I'd do it in a heartbeat and buy the 200/2.8.
But that choice wasn't given to me, so I had to get the 60-250 to cover that range.

Chuck... Welcome to the (fast growing) club! I'm only going to answer your 16-50 vs 17-70 question. The 20mm on the long end will Not be missed. At 16Mp you have PLENTY of crop room to spare. More important, I would think, is the extra stop on the DA*16-50 (f2.8 vs f4).

Yeah i was going to come in here and yell 'LTD PRIMES!' but I see your doing weddings. so... probably have to suffer with zooms :P

Yes, especially when the wedding group etc are outdoors

DA* 16-50mm f2.8 - 60-250mm f4 - 55mm f1.4 - 200mm f2.8 should cover weddings, portraiture and general purpose

DA 12-24mm f4 for some wide angle landscapes etc

and for wildlife when you need that extra reach the Sigma 150-500mm

The 17-70/4 is an excellent lens but the 16-50/2.8 gives you extra f-stops and proper sealing. Not sure about bokeh for portraits - I don't usually use zooms for portraits. Here's an example of what 17-70 can do (wide open):

100% crop

I think that lens is f3.5 -5.6 in comparison to a constant f2.8 with the 2 x DA*'s
