You are right, and as I have a K5 on it's way I am REALLY hoping Pentax got their QC act together...

I am really hoping the only problem here is 50hz fluorescent lighting artifacts .

Pentax has no more QC problems than any other camera maker (the SDM debacle being a notable and one off exception). The OP has indicated that he was shooting with discontinuous lighting, and the artifacts he got is consistent with that type of light.
End of story.
