I was curious what people are using for LCD protector. I really liked the ones that came with the D90 and D700. Is there anything similar for the K5?

On my previous cameras I have used one of the stick on glass ones. I have not bothered with the K5 as it comes with a tough glass screen as standard.

The K-5 LCD is made of some kind of scratch-resistant glass. Under normal circumstances no protector should be necessary. But it looks greasy real soon you use the cam.

Then they must have changed it from the K7. With That camera, while carrying it on the neck strap, it rubbed against the zipper on my jacket and put a light surface scratch on the screen. I put a peel and stick protector on it, no problems with it at all. Before I even put a battery in my K5, I put the same type of protection on the screen. The scratch on the K7 can only be seen at certain angles (without the protector) and only while the LCD is turned off but it is there none the less.

I've seen some people recommend this one:

LCD Screen Protector optical glass For Pentax K-7 K7 - eBay (item 350349042621 end time Nov-28-10 06:01:24 PST)

I have this one on the way to me and should have it shortly (the one I ordered has a protector for the main LCD screen as well as the top LCD):

ACMAXX 3.0 HARD LCD ARMOR PROTECTOR Pentax K5 K-5 K5D D - eBay (item 230545761341 end time Nov-18-10 02:33:18 PST)

I've also heard good things about the ACMAXX. On my K100D, I just used one of the vinyl peel on/off ones. I much prefer cleaning grease and sunscreen that end up deposited off of a replaceable protector than the screen itself, since I can replace them in time. Also, if you're ever thinking of reselling your camera, having had one on from day one (and hence no scratches to the screen) can improve resale value.

Giottos has a generic one you can find on B&H that is supposed to be quite good. It has anti-glare as well...

I've used the acmaxx on my k20d...much better than the vinyl one I tried on the K10D. Really does look like you're looking through glass.

Another option

I've fitted this K7 protector to my K5 (same size):
Rigid Camera LCD Screen Protector for Pentax K-7 K7 UK on eBay (end time 30-Nov-10 02:34:19 GMT)

I have previously used the K10 & K20 versions to protect the LCD from belt buckle damage.

Hi Dave,
Is this any good and is the image on the screen altered with its use?
Thanks.

A lot of people have found this tempered glass screen protector to be excellent. I used it on the K-7 and now on the K-5. The brand is GGS and it is by far the best I've come across to date. Image is very clear and it really protects against the small scratches that can come about from belt buckles, zippers, etc. Definitely a step up over the regular thin film types. A note of caution, care must be taken when putting it on. The 3M adhesive is very strong and you cannot reposition it without cracking the screen, so you need to get it aligned correctly when putting it on.

People who think the rear LCD screen is tough enough on its own to avoid scratches are sadly mistaken. I've seen it happen on many cameras. So an LCD protector is the first thing I put on before using the camera.

Naim,
I think that there is a slight loss of brightness but nothing major. Optically it seems OK and the glass is rigid so there are no air bubbles to distort the image as can happen with the film type protectors.

I scuffed the LCD on my K10 quite markedly prior to using one of these, since the way I carry my camera results in the LCD rubbing against my belt buckle. I have used the K20 version for over a year, the glass seems pretty scratch resistant and is still very much as it was when I fitted it.

Received my ACMAXX protectors today--very nice. They feel very sturdy, and look great. The top LCD protector does not quite match the exact shape of the K-5 top LCD, but it works fine. The back LCD protector matches almost perfectly.
