How do you like the Hoya Close up filter? Does the lens lose any sharpness or contrast?

In my experience, yes. Anytime you add more glass, especially glass that bends light you lose sharpness. Do not worry about contrast though, it can be corrected in PS.

However, everything being equal you can get some great shots with add on close up lenses as long as you do not go too strong. I notice a color red fringe around the objects when I get much above a factor of 3. Would I recommend them, yes. Especially if you only plan on using close up filters occasionally. If you plan on using them a lot you may want to purchase a used macro lens, or a new one if budget is not a problem. I use a K mount 50mm f2.8 Pentax macro lens that is about 20 years old. It only goes to 1:2, but the shots are great. You can get one of these in the hundred dollar price range. Other options are bellows or extension tubes on older manual lenses with f-stop rings. The attached shot was taken with my lens. The flower is about the size of a quarter, or even smaller.

I love this close up ! No fringe, it is a little bit soft wide open. It is a perfect addon for my DA* 50-135...

Sounds like a good setup. I currently have the 18-135 WR, and my plan is to upgrade to the 18-50 and 50-135 DA* lenses. Then add the 15 Limited...those 77mm filters aren't cheap though!

If you find some... I don't know if they are produced any more...
A good choice for the 50-135 and 15 ! You won't be disappointed !

Thank you Simon ! Did you use some waterproof bag ?

There are so many beautiful pictures here, mostly very colourful and taken in pleasantly warm conditions. So, I decided to show you a different perspective: ice fishing in southern Finland. The landscape is almost monochrome and makes especially the orange clothing stand out from the background. Pictures taken with K-5 and Sigma 8-16mm.

jppp, congrats! You caught the famous "sausage fish"!

TOUGEFC, I would also like to know what kind of uw-housing did you use.

Couple weeks ago I saw strange light in the sky. I think it was the Sun. Tamron 17-50mm@50, f/5.6.
