Misteur Valaire @ Montreal Jazz Festival 2011

Decided last evening to go to the main Montreal Jazz Festival event, aka "le gros show" which featured "Misteur Valaire", a small and a bit underground-ish electro-jazz band.

I came a bit late ( 1 hour before the show) so I couldn't be more in front of the stage, I don't like "elbowing" myself to the the front anyway; all picture were take from about 100 feet from the stage (or maybe less, I'm not good with distance).

K5+da* 50-135mm; some are heavilly cropped because of heads between me and the stage; some are taken with live-view (sometimes it work, sometimes it does not work well, but I can understand that it was not the perfect setting)

Waiting for the show to start.

Trumpetting!

A very attentive spectator. (from another stage)

The whole set : Misteur Valaire - a set on Flickr

That third one is just brilliant. They're all good, but that one is a standout, IMO.

Just received this gem a few days ago.. so here the pics. Not the best sample, but K5 makes the best of lenses I have. I'm very satisfied with K5 since for the first time in my life I shoot in JPG and use Tav mode with no worries, I must say the AF-C is very usable now and totally blow my K20D away.

I used the K-5 along side the 645d... I'm going to write another front page article comparing the two cameras.

Those two shots of your son really stand out Simon, well done
How do you manage to keep the camera steady enough in the first one?

Thanks it was shot as 1/30 so it was a combo of multiple attempts, holding the camera hard against my chest, and luck

I think it's important to stress the value of multiple attempts. Conventional wisdom, for instance, says that you can't handhold a 1/4 sec shot with a 50mm; but if you follow all the rules of long exposures (keep your elbows in, stand solidly, breath out and hold it, squeeze slowly, etc) and do it a few times, you'll often find one that's very sharp.

That is a really nice shot, Simon. Great execution and expression!

Thanks Steve, yeah the secret is multiple attempts and there is bound to be a winner
