K5 in the Narrows at Zion National Park

I did a hike a couple of days ago in The Narrows at Zion Nat'l Park. I shot mostly with my 645D but I also took my K-5 as a backup for a few handhelds. Here is a stitch frame cropped essentially square from two vertical K-5 files, shot handheld.

I was using a tripod, with mirror up , 2 second delay. That was the shot set up. Don't think I truned SR off , should have but don't remember doing it so it's likley I did not.
I believe the timed modes automatically disable SR. Check it out. Thats the default way it works on the k-x.

I’m sorry about this off-topic subject.
Thank you very much Dave. Your explanation gives me a lot of new ideas. My next photo, ISO 800, shows a night time scene free of software production. Only RAW to jpg trough CS4. As you see, the noise is there. My objective is capturing same movement during the starting of the rail compositions. 60, 90 or 125, correctly aligned, are enough. The results, till now, are not what I expected. A stable tripod is always with me.
Regards, Vítor

Lovely images you have in your collection.

I do not know if the question is appropriated or probably inconvenient but; what kind of edition software or camera HIGH ISO NR settings you are using? I have been trying to shoot (outdoor) selecting ISO 1600 to gain in speed but the results are far away from what you and some people have been showing in this forum.
Best regards, Vitor

Having gone through similar experience, here are my observations:

1. Avoid underexposure!!! as it raises noise significantly, even in the K5.
2. Turn off in-camera noise reduction, which sometimes produces smeared results.
3. Evaluate the RAW image, rather than the JPEG. I have images showing a large discrepancy between the two, with the camera-produced JPEG on occasions showing something quite different from what is actually in the RAW. Yes, the RAW may show more noise than the JPEG, but it is better to remove it during post processing.

I find that if I follow the above, high ISO images can come out remarkably clean.

That's not true. I always underexpose by 1 EV. You can gain 5 EV without noise problems.

I will I am still looking for the SR swtich on back of the camera (where it was on the K20D) , thanks.

Vitor - the Topaz Denoise intergrates well with CS4. Download the 30 day trial , it's fully functinal. You can search the in processing forum for other products , everyone has their preference for what it's worth I like the Topaz Denoise. (it's like camera bodies - there are a lot of good ones). I like that shot BTW.

For night photography the K-5 simply is superb. This shot was taken at ISO 200, f8 1/15th -1EV with the TAMRON 24-135 AD free hand. Even most of the very brightly lit neon sings have some definition while shadows are rendered just right also. And whats more there was no time spent on preparation, aim, autofocus, fire.
I reckon one cannot ask for much more from a camera - the K-5 superb.

Greetings

Rupert - your squirrel posts are hilarious. I really enjoy them. All the squirrels around here are extremely skittish. And much thinner.

Beautiful. Love how the hiker just entering the Narrows lends some scale.
