I got into big trouble a few days ago here in this forum for making such a bold statement only to be proven wrong and I am smarting over it ever since. The bird sits "on the picture" rather than "in the picture". A very sharp object with a white sharpening halo against a smooth out of focus background always has this effect to me.
In any case, I have been using for many years now a dedicated sharpening program. It will allow you fine tune the sharpening process and one of its big strengths is to eliminate black and white sharpening halos. If your pic has this white sharpening halo this program will fix it. I don't use any other program to do my sharpening.

P.S. You are not a Collingwood supporter are you?

I remember that little contretemps
Thanks for the info. When I look at the full size .jpg I can's see any issues. I use a platelet sharpening plug-in with Bibble Pro before exporting to jpg and I haven't seen any issues with it. In this case I resized with IrfanView and thought that it might have introduced some artifacts. On second or tenth viewing, it's probably OK. It was the black breast side that I was concerned about.
Collingwood? No way. Hawthorn. It was the first place I lived in Oz and now I'm just up the road in Camberwell.
