K-5 jpeg one * burst

Just did a test with my K-5 (and K-7).

With the K-7 you can make (with a fast card) in burst mode JPeg's from one star quality until the card is full. In practice this means 306 frames/minute, so 5,1 fps wich bring a datastream of 8,6 MB/s (1,69 MB average).

Same test with the K-5, 16 megapixel one * quality. This brings in one minute 238 Jpeg's, that's just under 4 fps and a datastream of 8,0 MB/s (2,0 MB average).

The K-5 takes even a lot of extra time for digesting the files, since after the minute there is stil a filled buffer that still has to be digested. The K-7 never fills up the buffer.

So what is holding the K-5 back?
- It can't be the SDHC card. I used a class 10 card wich is much faster (at least 13-14 MB/s). Even when the K-7 would use the maximum writingspeed then with the K-5 you would expect 255 pictures to written away to come to the 8,6 MB/s.
- When I count the pixels then it doesn't match up eather. You would expect then at least 274 frames when the K-7 was working at it's maximum speed.

Where does it come from? Someone an idea?

- Is it the PRIME II processor different (don't expect that)?
- Is it the A/D conversion that is with the K-5 onboard of the sensor instead of the separate A/D conversion in the K-7?
- ?????

It would be very helpful if you could repeat the same exact tests, with the old firmware and the new firmware. Any difference ?

I also assume that you switched off all forms of in-camera PP. Correct ?

Look forward to see your results.

The K-7 is amazing in Hi continuous shooring with JPEG one-star and I would hope that the K-5 does as well.

Any post-processing that could slow things down? Like lens correction?

(16*(2^14))/(14.6*(2^12))
4.38356164383561643835

perhaps where it all starts? (hint: the buffer is not holding (only) jpegs..)

Class 10 cards just have to be a minimum of 10mb/sec. Sandisk's fastest SD card has "Extreme speed at up to 30MB/second read/write". Note that is not minimum, but maximum. It could be only 10mb write and 30mb read and still make the claim of being class 10.

is one star faster than 5 star? I suppose compressing the jpgs heavily is faster than writing larger files?

FYI I tried shooting at 2MP and I still got about 34 JPEGs - so I can't help but think that the camera just throws unprocessed data into the buffer.

1080p video is 2mp, so may as well just film at 25fps

Not if I want to focus in between, lol. In any case, the point is that Pentax has failed at programming the buffer. Hopefully they'll further improve on it.
