K-5 Macros

The K-5 opens up a whole new world for macro fans. Thought I would fool around with macro, live view and my 32" 100Hz Full HDTV. The results surprised me to say the least.

I connected K-5 to TV via HDMI cable, set the camera to Live View and worked off the TV screen. Lens was a Tameron 90mm macro and high mag shots were with 56mm of extension tubes to see the spider. Auto focus in LV was ok if there was enough contrast, if not it was manual focus. Where the AF worked a check on manual focus didn't improve the image.

Manual focus is the bane of high mag macro shooting but the combination of LV on the FHDTV and the 2/4/6 LV screen magnification essentially eliminates the time and frustration, not to mention eye strain, in macro focusing. It's not really tethering but has to be the next best thing.

Sample shots are straight from the camera with the exception of the red bottle brush which was cropped about 25%.

On a different note, I haven't stopped smiling since I got my K-5. One of the most useful (to me) surprises is the capacity to shoot JPEG and convert selected shots to RAW at any time after.

With a grip and LR 3 in the post this old film shooter will finally stop bemoaning the "good old days".

Here are your pictures

In photo album when you see full size image click right mouse button and choose picture info, copy direct link to jpg into clipboard, go here into post, press add image icon, paste link from clipboard, press ok, and this is it.

Isn't it I've seen/done better macros than these but in this case I was more interested in the process than the pictures. Using the wide screen LCD TV and K-5 was a lot easier than squinting into a magnified view finder.

I find the Live View a lot more useable as well. The only downside, of course, is that I am burning through my batteries (I have the grip) faster but that is to be expected lighting up that big screen all the time.
