if the AF on the K5 tested as fast as the Nikon

if the K5 had movie button

if the K5 would auto focus in movie mode

if the K5 had tethering

if the K5 had been tested with updated firmware

if the larger buffer with updated firmware

........just wondering........do they have a "Diamond" rating?...LOL!

I did read the review and thought it was fair considering the past Pentax reviews......
if the K-5 is able to wipe your butt after you take a .........
and who really cares what it does?

I'm surprised the K-5 snaps Gold while the Nikon D7000 "only" gets Silver, despite the fact that the K-5 is categorised as "Semi-professional" and the Nikon only as "Mid Range".

I think it was a bit inappropriate by DPR to essentially restrict the recommendation to Pentax owners, but on the whole this is great news for Pentax. Hopefully it will translate into sales for Pentax.

Kudos to DPR for figuring out what the "slow" and "fast" Auto-ISO modes do. They need not to have bothered.

However, how did DPR come to the conclusion that the Nikon D7000 has better build-quality than the K-5? Maybe a consequence of the different categories they put the cameras in. But then why does the K-7 (also "Semi-professional") have better build quality than the K-5?

Also, I think it is poor that they reported the FPS capacity of the K-5 based on the old firmware. The new firmware provides a dramatic improvement. I guess they couldn't admit what the K-5 is really capable of in terms of buffer size, and admit that it has better build quality than the Nikon D7000, and use the price that they are advertising below their review to base their "value" evaluation on.

The distance to the Nikon D7000 would have been too big.

BTW, are they implying that Nikon is lying about "their own sensor technology" when they say that the K-5 and the Nikon D7000 are using a very similar sensor?

P.S.: @ohce: You couldn't link to "http://www.dpreview. com/reviews/pentaxk5/" because this forum unfortunately blocks links to DPR.

Exactly - I was expecting an 81 also!

But I have seen hints in the past that DPR is actually somewhat fond of Pentax (in contrast to some of the negative accusations I've read) and would like to continue to see them succeed. For example, they've had a positive attitude in some other reviews, and they re-shot the K-5 samples (around the time of the 60D review) rather quickly when some people noticed the setup didn't seem to be quite right. I wondered at the time if they would have been quite so responsive for some other brands - possibly not, because the brand's reputation probably wouldn't be as vulnerable, what with their big market share and extensive lineups. When you only effectively have 2 or 3 'current' bodies (K-5, K-r, and K-x) an inaccurate negative could be much more damaging.

AF system not as versatile as Nikon D7000 (which is a cheaper camera)

i dont know how nikonian reacted about this.... they try to dump their mid range D80 or D90 to get the new one...and it said cheaper ...

RAW (DNG): 6.3 - 7 fps for 9 frames, then 1.2fps. Approx 10 seconds to recover.
Why didn't they use 1.01 firmware - 20-25 RAW buffer?

I am surprised that they didn't at least put a note, saying that even though the camera was tested with firmware 1.0, a new firmware upgrade did improve the RAW buffer to 24. It is a huge difference from the D7000.

Their scoring system doesn't make sense either. They try to stick cameras into brackets and then compare them against other cameras in the same bracket, but that is hard to do. Other than price, what really separates the D7000 from the D300s class? Why can't you compare the two? Upper end cameras will continue to get higher scores, based on features, image quality and that's not a problem. But pretending to compare the K5 only against the 7D and D300s based on its initial MSRP, when in reality you are comparing it against the D7000 and the 60D is silly.

Don't bother with value/price either. Prices fluctuate so much that what is a good value now, may not be in six months, yet, the review will never be updated.

Maybe send the letter to author of review? Do you know how to do it?

That wasn't the case. From the review:
"Ultimately, we have no hesitation in recommending the Pentax K-5 to anyone - not only existing Pentax users [...]"

Here's a rather odd inconsistency => Build quality vs. K7

As a sidebar, I thought the review was excellent.

can anyone tell me what's the deal with the movie button? why is it so important?
I don't ever shoot video, but is it so hard to turn the little wheel and press the shutter?

When comparing between the K-5 and K-x, the K-x seems to have better "Low-light/High-iso-performance".. weird.
