If it's new and doesn't work, send it back for replacement.

Since you have the return option, I would take it back to the shop and test the lens on another body, and if they have another copy, try that on your K5. Maybe even look at the Sigma 24-70 f2.8. It's a big beast, but a great lens.

I think all older 3rd party lenses are going to have issues as far as compatibility till the firmware catches up. The PK mounts don't turn over as much as the Canon or Nikon so you are more likely to get an older copy sitting in the store. Anything with HSM "should" work (like your 70-200) as they are a newer design, but they are more expensive.

Hi kamui,

I bought my Tamron 28-75 new with my DS in 2005, and it works as expected with my K-5. I doubt that it would be a firmware issue.

i have used several Tamron lenses without issues 17-50, 28-75, 90 on the K5. One quick check would be on another camera body.

Sorry I've been away for the past couple of days.
All your replies convinced me to bring the lense back for repair/swap, so that's what I'll do in the next days.
For the record, I tried the aluminium foil trick, but either I didn't managed to do it correctly (very likely) or it wasn't enough to make the lense work. Anyway, it didn't work, but it's not relevant anymore
Thanks again to all of you, your help was much appreciated
