K5 and 4 way controller

I'm confused by the 4 way controller.
It can be used either to control the focus point when you have Sel focus
or it can be used to access various setting like the drive mode and flash mode etc.

But I can see how to go from one set of controls to the other.
Usually I can get there by going from sel focus to central focus and back
or going to green mode and back.

Can anybody help please.
Not sure if I have explained this in detail enough.

You have to press and hold OK to get the arrow keys to change the AF point rather than access the menu. An icon will then light up in the viewfinder. You have to hold the OK button again to access the menus, or switch out of SEL mode.

See p.21 (and others) of the K5 manual.

Basically, you toggle between using the four-way controller buttons to control the autofocus point (if you have SEL chosen for autofocus point) and using those same buttons to carry out the functions identified by the icons on each button. You carry out this toggling simply by depressing the middle (OK) button for about 1 second.

You can tell which function the controller buttons are toggled to by consulting the status screen on the monitor. Touch the shutter release button lightly to get to the status screen. If the controller is governing the autofocus SEL function, the autofocus image toward the bottom right of the status screen will be highlighted and four arrows will appear around it (up, down, right, and left). If the controller is governing the functions specified on the buttons (WB, drive mode, flash, custom setttings), then those four images just above the bottom of the status screen will be highlighted. If you have your camera set (it is by default) to beep, then each time you toggle between these, you will hear a beep.
