SD Card Capacity

From those of you who have K5 already can you tell me when shooting in RAW how many images you get on 4,8,16 and 32Gb cards. I've been using 4's in my K10 and K20 for years now.

On my 32 Gb card (it is actually smaller then that) where with my K-7 fitting 1.950 RAW and now with the K-5 it fits only 1300 RAW.

I haven't gotten around to buying a bigger card yet so I'm using an old 1Gb card. I get 29 raw pictures with it (DNG, AdobeRGB if that matters). So this would make 116 on a 4Gb card but there's probably a big margin of error here. I'm not the machine-gunning type so for me a 16Gb card will be enough to walk about a whole day without having to erase bad pics.

thanks Ron and Jim. I do a lot of event photography and don't like putting all my eggs in one basket so about 100 images ona card is fine. I can then swap to another. cheers...anyone else input is welcome though

I love that - 'only 1300'. Remember when we could only get 36 shots on a roll of film?

Just FYI, there are 64 and 128GB cards being released for the trigger happy =)

Lexar Media Introduces the First 128GB Professional Secure Digital Extended Capacity Memory Card for Photographers and Videographers | Lexar

Edit: They are SDXC, so a firmware update might be necessary according to the K5 specs on the forum.

When empty, my K-5 gives 922 for DNG RAW on my 32GB card. In practice, the actual capacity appears to be quite a bit more. It probably estimates conservatively, going by the largest file sizes. The actual files can range from 16-30MB each, depending on the ISO and scene.

Be aware that the video files are huge, though. They can reach upwards of 500+ MB per minute.

1,950 RAWs on a 32 gig card?

On my K20D I get 670 RAWs on a 16GB card. this works out at about 23MB a pic, which is about right.

1,950 RAWs on a 32 gig card works out at 16Gb per RAW.
What RAW format are you shooting at?

Ahhh, you must be shooting PEF. I just tried shooting PEF for a change and PEF files are about 13Mb as opposed to 23Mb for a RAW.

Interesting.

My Pentax bodies have two options for raw: PEF (Pentax proprietary format) and DNG (Adobe proprietary format).

Both are raw. Or "RAW" if one prefers. It's not an acronym - just an English word meaning unprocessed or uncooked.

PEF seems to usually have a smaller file size, though. Perhaps Pentax included some lossless compression? If so, the ratio between PEF and DNG file sizes should vary from one image to another because the images may provide more or less opportunity for lossless compression.

Yes you're correct, they are both RAW. In my double posting of lapse I meant DNG rather than RAW. I shall no dboutb replenish the shortfall in brain cells by the morning.

DNG isn't a true acronym either. Digital Negative would be DN.

Capitals are no guarantee of a an ACRONYM

But DNG is the file name suffix hence we use DNG.

I did a quick test shooting the card full in PEF and in DNG with the same settings and scene. The results are that I could fit 33 PEF files and 31 DNG files on my 1Gb card. The camera estimates 29 for both file types so it is a conservative estimate in both cases, but more so for PEF.
