You can use a hex editor/viewer (e.g. XVI32). The internal version is at the beginning of the file, just before "Copyright (C) HOYA CORPORATION" - hex values "01 02 15 0A" (obviously, that's "1 2 21 10" in decimal)

Firmware 1.02?

The creation date is the same on the K-5 1.02 firmware update at both the American and Japanese Pentax sites: 12/19/10. Where's the new "stealth" update to be had?

They are the same date and time because it's a silent update. That's what makes it stealth. If you want, go to the Canada website, they still are distributing the old one.

The new version is also 5kb larger than the old one so something has changed.

There are two differences, first the 2nd version did not compact as tightly as the 1st, possibly because there is more info involved. Second, the checksums of the bin files are different, meaning they must be different.

The k5_e102w.exe file for v1.02.21.10 is 9808KB

Yup, both bin files are the same size. however date may have changed in the files which affected teh compression of the exe zip file

Something somewhere in the file changed or the checksums would be the same (or hash, use a tool like HashCalc to see for yourself).

For me, the "silent" update fixed the phenomenon of the camera failing to shoot when built-in flash is up, LiveView is engaged, an SDM lens is attached, and "shutter release while charging" option is disabled. Maybe there are other changes as well, but this is the only one I noticed.
