Do I need V1.01 before running V1.02 update?

Can you read official instructions?

PS: No you don't. It's like installing new version of operating system from scratch.

Loaded firmware 1.02 just now. K5 still seems to work! Can't comment on the increased functionality.

Firmware 1.02 - SDXC fully supported???

Just wondering if the comment "* Transfer rate is not compatible with UHS speed class" on the official Pentax website means that the K-5 will actually not support the speed gains inherent in the SDXC UHS-I and UHS-II technology. If so, all the future improved SDXC cards will not perform at nominal speed, if they will be at all usable. Any thoughts anyone?

NOTE: Pentax's implementation of SDXC compatibility supports the capacity increases of the SDXC specification, but not the higher speed ratings unique to the new card spec.

My Eye-Fi Pro X2 card, which had been causing random "memory card error" on 1.01, now seems to be working on 1.02. Early days yet, but here's hoping..

Thanks Patriotap, I didn't see that quote/note on the Pentax site. Where did you get this info? But it still sucks. I was more interested in getting the speed increase, not so much the capacity.

I suspect the data transfer is running as fast as it can already, there wouldn't be much point in throttling it back, so all they can do is arrange it so that the camera can address the full amount of memory available to the new card spec.

I'm pretty sure the card isn't the limiting factor for speed. If i remember correctly, someone did a rough test of the max speed the k-5 can write to SD and it came out to about 8.75MB/s. I doubt this will improve with firmware updates unfortunately.

By the way, I would be interested if someone could tell me exactly what the max write speed is, as it could save me some money. There's no point buying a 30MB/s card when my camera can only do 10!

8.75MB/s sounds a bit slow, so I did a little test. I ripped off 24 raw pictures and timed the whole sequence from that I pressed the shutter until the busy lamp had gone out.

I still have the 1.01 firmware, and I used a 30MB/s card.

The pictures takes up 578MB on the card.
The camera was done writing after 34 seconds, that is 17MB/s written to the card.
