Has the exposure problem with flash been solved?

Hi all,
Given that I was one of the very first few people who reported the problem with over exposure with flash on K 5 (https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-k-5-forum/119808-k-5-flash.html), I thought I'll update you after the latest firmware update (ver 1.02).
I took some shots with the flash (Metz 58 AF-1 with Stofen diffuser) at various angles and below are the results. I think they have cracked it
Flash head pointing straight

Flash head at 45 degrees

60 degrees

75 degrees

90 degrees

Pointing left

and lastly pointing back

Regards.

I just did a series of test shots with the K-5 (firmware v. 1.02) and the Pentax AF-360FGZ, and was very pleased at the results. Straight on, tilted up at various degrees; all shots looked great with no overexposure. So thumbs up here.

Actually for me the flash exposure pbm was solved earlier. I had the K-5 replaced due to the stains and as a side effect the flash exposure issue was gone as well. But I gained the (low light + wide angle + warm light) frontfocus in return (I don't think my previous K-5 had it).

With my Metz 58 AF the problem is persists. Approx 1 - 1+1/3 EV overexposed.

Using Firmware 1.02, I did a test with the AF-540fgz (in P-TTL) - the bounce flash is still overexposing by about 1.5EV.

It's good to know that the new firmware is solving some issues, but i have a question.

Can the K-5 new fw v1.02 really expose correctly(using external flash) without changing aperture, sensor ISO or shutter speed if using bounce flash at the colored ceiling or not so bright wall, or maybe a ceiling that is 8 meters high and a wall that is another ten meters away like a ballroom size ? (just a thought)

The concept of P-TTL is that a split second before the actual exposure, it sends out a "pre-flash" that lets the camera know how the flash will behave in the environment. Because the camera has already "seen" what the flash does with the ceiling/walls beforehand, it then adjusts the power of the second flash accordingly for the actual exposure.

The only thing that changes is the flash power. All the other camera settings remain the same (except perhaps AWB). The problem with the K-5's bounce flash bug is that it is firing the flash at a much higher power than it should.

Anyway, I found the bounce flash overexposure problem very early on, and was disappointed that 1.01 didn't fix it. I would test 1.02, but my camera is currently off at Pentax for replacement, so I can't. Oh well, it's good news if they really do fix it (and hopefully my new camera won't have the problem).

The original bug was that the camera would set the exposure for the ambient lighting and forgetting that the flash was also firing. So usually the ISO would be very high, thus leading to over exposure.
Version 1.01 was never going to be able to solve the problem because the time frame was very short - it was released only about a fortnight after the bug was spotted. In the new firmware, the ISO seems to respond to the presence of the flash.
All the shots I took were on 'aperture priority' f8. The camera in all shots has set the exposure at 1/180 secs and ISO 160.
So looks like happy days
Cheers

I had a little of the over exposure problem with 1.01, but after i turned on highlight correction it exposed perfectly every time, much more consistently than my k20d. I will try it without highlight correction now that I have 1.02 and see how it works. I have a metz 48.

Sorry, but hot-shoe flash communication issue is still there, Pentax didn't fix it in fw 1.02. The original flash issue is that sometimes the camera doesn't send proper info to the hot-shoe flash and therefore the flash may fire at full power. It's a sporadic issue, sometimes you can take X shots without any problems and later take Y shots with the issue.
