This is totally consistent with the calls I made to Pentax USA both a little over 2 weeks ago and again yesterday.
Which means that Pentax Japan reigns over all!
This may take some time before we hear anything from them (Japan).

Falk, I've just checked on my K5 with the last 1.02.21.10 FW, and my AF assist lamp lights twice : once before moving, and once before the final check.

Sometimes it will light only once, but it's when the AF module could not lock onto anything (blank wall).
The lens would then rack in to infinity, and the focus confirm hexagon will blink...

I don't think focusing on a blank wall is a fair test of a camera's AF. There is no contrast to help it lock focus

Great thread. Really got me thinking I should order another K-5 ( I was going to wait until later). In the end, in a moment of weakness, I ordered a d7000...I figured I needed to try for myself. If it blows me away, I got my answer, if it doesnt I am back for a K5...

Interesting to note, the firmware on English pentax.jp has been changed back to K-5 Firmware 1.02.21.07, a regression to back before the silent update.

If you use the Japanese language on the pentax.jp site and click through the links you will find the same one as the last few weeks (K-5 Firmware 1.02.21.10), but the English language link is (K-5 Firmware 1.02.21.07, a regression). The US site is still (K-5 Firmware 1.02.21.10).

Oh well. I am still on firmware 1.01.00.05 as I have no need for SDXC yet. Would be interesting to see if areidjr (post499) uses the same. And Christine a newer one.

As it would mean (and it probably does) that Pentax recently changed the behaviour of the AF assist light. So, they have been looking at it. Let's hope that they don't consider this minor change a "fix"

Well, I can say it seems spot-on with the double AF light, anyway...
But as I have a lot of FF lenses, it's nearly always blocked by the lens...

My new K5 has firmware 1.01.00.08

any thoughts on that, was the 1.01 firmware subject to a silent release much like the 1.02 was ?...FWIW....the new K5 performs much better that the previous in low light FF

I'm on 1.02.21.10 and the assist light behaves the same as yours.

That's right. All DSLR cameras exhibit back and front focussing. That's why the good ones have parameters to calibrated each lens.

The K-5 front focussing in low light is a seperate issue though

Everyone, please ignore my previous test results showing FF at EV2.2

It appears from a discussion I have with jolepp that I may have been overzealous in doing the AF fine adjustment and the factory settings may have been correct after all.

I will reset my K-5 back to factory AF adjustment, so my earlier results (FF only apparent close to EV1) are correct.

My apologies for adding to the confusion.

@Falk - have not been able to check the exact firmware version on my K-5 but I suspect it's the same at Tommot1965 as we both (probably) received cameras from the same production batch.

Because the AF assist light in your camera behaves differently (and better) than in mine (1.01.00.05) or areidjr (1.02.21.10) I am really curious about your version.

BTW, in the four digit firmware string, the last figure (5, 8, 10 etc.) seems to be the true engineering serial (the real build number is hidden to us though). All other stuff (like 1.02.21) is prepended according to marketing requirements. That's why you can see factory cameras with 1.00 or 1.01 releases which are the same as 1.02 upgrades.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you Falk

I used PhotoME on one of my photos, and it turns out I have the same firmware as you, so it's interesting :-)

PentaxVersion 70.0.0
Pentax Model 0x12e76
DSP/CPU Firmware Version 1.01.00.05
Manufacture Date 2010-12-09
Internal Serial Number 30282

I hope those numbers mean something to you, because they don't mean anything to me (apart from manufacture date)

I can definitely confirm that if the AF assist light comes on, the end result is a focused shot. I have two shots (one with exposure 1.6sec, the other 2.0sec) that are perfectly focused.

Falk are you able to post your K-5's Model and Version numbers to make sure the camera build revisions? I don't know if these numbers will change if they make production changes, though.
