First hand experience has made it clear to me that OS + SR on at the same time will make the image even worse than with both off. It may not make a difference if shooting at a high shutter speed where you wouldn't need stabilization anyway, but at low speeds where SR/OS would be needed, it will indeed cause problems.

Consider this: OS and SR are completely independent systems with no interaction. With OS on, the optical image is already stable. However, the SR system still detects acceleration from camera shake, and thus moves what it thinks is appropriate, no matter what the image from the lens is doing. That means that the sensor moves relative to the stable image, introducing its own blur.
That's interesting. I always thought the SR worked upon movement of the image hitting the sensor rather working on the feedback from an accelerometer in the camera.

Wouldn't work that way because no light touches the sensor until the mirror flips up and the shutter opens, at which point it is too late. It needs to be compensating before the shutter opens. It also wouldn't work while the shot was being taken.

I enjoy using the Sigma. The OS gives you a stabilized image in the view finder which I find nice. Here's some shots (posted in another thread too):

I didn't get the right wing tip in the frame, so I cropped the left one as well...

Just a demonstration of the effect of OS + SR. All shots taken with the Sigma 18-250 OS HSM at 250mm, 1/30s shutter speed, to strain the practical limits of stabilization. Handheld, unbraced of course. Roughly 100% crops (~860 pixels downsized/normalized to 800).
Both off:

OS on, SR off:

OS off, SR on:

Both on:

As you can see, having both on is worse than both off.

Could any of the owners of this lens give us a feedback on the noise and relative fluidity of the OS system ?

I've read several tests claiming that the stabilization was working by fits and starts, particularly when trying to follow the subject on a long distance. (Anyway, these tests were comparison with the canon stabilization which has very good reputation, we do not have this kind of comparison for us pentax users)
I have experienced a high pitch noise with other brand stabilization, and I found it uncomfortable. It was not loud at all, but it was driving me crazy due to the high frequency. Did anyone experienced this kind of noise with this lens ?

@Cannikin: interesting, SR seems tiny bit better than OS.

I've noticed neither fits nor starts. And no noises either. The stabilized view finder is nice - esp. when trying to catch BIF. I miss a focus clutch, but I'm learning to pre-focus.

Have you compared the Sigma 150-500 OS with the K-5 stabilization and if so can you let me know what you found works best? Thanks.

It's a great combo. Since the 150-500 it's kinda slow, you can use higher ISO on the K5 and still use F8 (but even at F6.3 the lens is OK).
Here some pictures:

Cheers!
Do you use Sigma OS or K-5 anti-shake? Thanks

I have a K-5 and Sigma 150-500. I use the K-5 SR and if I am getting shots of moving wildlife at near 500 mm then I keep my shutter speed at 250 or so which also helps get a clear shot.

250 is quite slow for 500mm ,do you have some examples? as I think to get this lens also with K5II
Thanks

The only advantage of the os version is when you use the lens without tripod, which I would not recommend...

He's already proved they're the same performance going by post #19 images.
