When you have confirmation it has arrived, send C.R.I.S. an email. They will reply with your Work Order Number and Customer Number, which you can use to monitor the progress. They told me to expect a 2 to 4 week turn around from the date of arrival.
This may spud stupid but what is C.R.I.S ? What is the number? I assume customer service of some kind .

I interesting side not. Missed a call on my cell today from AZ. no message left. Not sure if Pentax or what, I will goggle the number later

Nope, not Pentax Canada. CRIS in Arizona (I bought my K-5 in the US so I deal with US warranty). Although to be fair, I have nothing but praise for CRIS as a camera service company. They didn't make the defective camera.

The electronic level is way off, and the sensor was littered with dust. I don't get why there can't be a function in the camera that allows us to recalibrate the electronic level. It seems like such a simple thing. I could've cleaned the dust myself (although there really was a lot of it)

Here's a small section of the sensor, 50% of original size:

Did they 'fix' your old camera or send you a new one? I know your post said replacement, but did you check the serial number?

As for the sensor stains appearing in use see: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-k-5-forum/127898-statement-pentax-germany.html.

It seems this is about something volatile being trapped under the sensor glass. Speculation : this might be drops of solvent used e.g. to clean the glass during sensor assembly; when this evaporates it leaves behind a residue (=stain).

With this in mind the stain appearing in use would just mean that that the (liquid?) stuff had not (fully) evaporated initially and would be invisible until that had happened (e.g. due to the sensor warming up a bit in use, which would happen especially when using LV). This could also explain QC missing these: they might not have been visible when the affected sensors/cameras left (/entered) their respective factories.

'twas a brand new one, whole brand new kit (with all the accessories) with a brand new serial number. However I understand they'll be repairing cameras suffering from sensor stains from now on.

I asked a Pentax USA customer service rep what happens to my warranty in this case. When a camera is replaced with a brand new one (not repaired) under warranty, the 1 year warranty starts over from the time the new camera is shipped to me. My warranty isn't ticking away like a time bomb during these multiple replacements.

So everyone keep your paperwork regarding replaced cameras! If your camera needs any further service under warranty in the future, be sure and include this paperwork along with your original purchase receipt.

So as I indicated in the first post I included in the box a print out of the chat, copy of email I received with shipping label and copy of email I sent to the person sending the label. In that last email i included that I needed the camera back By 02/19/11 for a trip.

I got word via UPS tracking it was received yesterday and was happy when I received the following email this morning. Happy because it meant they actually opened the electronic one I sent and or the paper copy.

Here it is -

Thank you for your reply.

Your K-5 s/n 3839123 was received at our repair facility on 1/27/11 and is assigned to Work order Number XXXXXXX . (Your K-5 is scheduled for replacement). Although an estimated completion date is not yet available, I have asked the shop to expedite the replacement *(if possible) and indicated the date you have requested.

If you have further questions, please feel free to reply.

Thanks again,

I re-read the statement posted on the USA website:
K-5 Sensor Stains | Pentax Support

It says, "All users of these defective products will receive free repair at our service center." Does this mean that you don't have to have a warranty, even used ones that have changed hands? If this is true, this would be very good news indeed!

I still think it is a good idea to register these old and new serial#'s in the Pentaxforums K-5 database to keep track of what is happening and for "all users" to "keep all paperwork". There are also some front focusing issues going on too.

Since one of the items they want sent in the box, is the Receipt, I question if they will provide warranty service on a second hand camera, if there is such an animal at this early point in time.
