Would these count?

Frankly, I don't know how to evaluate light EV's, so I don't know if these qualify for the discussion. I just know what low light means. Here are some low light, wide open shots:

Michael

K20D, 70mm lens, f/2.4, 1/15, ISO 3200

K20D, 70mm lens, f/2.4, 1/6, ISO 3200

K20D, 40mm lens, f/2.8, 1/25, ISO 1600

K20D, 21mm lens, f/4, 1/60, ISO 1600

K20D, 21mm lens, f/3.5, 1/45, ISO 1600

This shot was done with flash, but it was almost totally dark. I have shot besides a Canon shooter who could not focus in this kind of situation.

K20D, 40mm lens, f/4, 1/60, ISO 400

Unfortunately, this thread really requires 2 shots - the one you got with another camera, and essentially the same shot or conditions not gotten with the K-5. Otherwise, what are we looking at (or not)?

That would be fine, but I was not looking for what the K5 might not do....I am assuming that for those affected it won't do what some other camera will, and was just asking to see what might be missed.
Skyoftexas gave some good examples, I appreciate that, and would think that with all the squealing, there would be many more that posters would post to show their low light shooting experiences and needs......but apparently not?

I'm not really trying to make any point, for me low light shooting is a rarity, but I too want the ability when needed. I was just thinking that many must have a ton of low light shots to emphasize the need, but it doesn't seem that way, does it?
Best Regards!

that would make it 4 shots, no ? a dim light shot and a lit shot, from each cam.

K-5 on the left and K100DS on the right. Both shot at 4EV (as metered by my Sekonic L308s)

So this issue is not one where it takes pushing the camera to extremes where all other DSLR will show the problem as well.

If you want to see what the K-5 vs. K100D comparisons look like from 1EV to 8EV look here K-5 FF Samples The K100D is consistently focusing properly while the K-5 improves with light level.

In any case this K-5 is going back for a refund and I'm going to wait until the issues are sorted out before I buy back in.

Al, I already know your problems, and in no way do I make light of them...or anyone elses. I know there are times when low light shooting is both necessary and appealing. My only desire here was to see some of the types of low light shooting that might be missed in a malfunctioning K5. I had hoped we would see more?

For the record, I know Al and have for a long time. We are not old "bosom buddies" and owe each other nothing but he is honest, qualified and straightforward without any BS in his postings. So when he had a problem with his first K5, 2nd, and then 3rd, any doubt about some experiencing problems vanished. But....this is not about is or isn't, it is about posting low light photos...if anyone has some they would not have wanted to miss, post them here!
Best Regards

The understanding that I have (based on discussion in that other long thread) is that the AF has tendency for a very *slight* FF in low light.

So shooting at f4 masks out any inaccuracy in the AF, not that f4 by itself improves the accuracy of the AF. Of course, lenses are generally sharper when stopped, so that is also a factor.

Hope I have made that clear.
You've made it clear that you haven't followed all the discussions. There's nothing 'very slight' about the FF fault in low light with my K-5. Ansd frankly most people who have the problem haven't described it as 'very slight'

Minimising the problem isn't helping.

Thanks for the chart, Smeggypants. Help me in interpreting it, please. So the first camera setting would = 1.5 EV?

Roughly yes.

I'm trying to find a calculator that allows you to type the values in. If anyone's got a link to one please post it.

It's not the lens , its the photographer and subject that's made the shot.

You are right. I have ignored all your posts in that thread, as I didn't like your attitude.
