K5 questions

I am finding myself a bit irritated. I bought the K5 and I do have to say that I love the camera but nowhere did I find on the Pentax site that the video will only record for about 5.5 min before shutting off. I have a 32 gb scan disc extreme card in it. I was planing on using this for shooting a number of video applications and five and a half min is not enough for some of them. I may very well have missed the info on this but I did look quite a bit. My question is, does anyone know of a way to get the K5 to video for an extended amount of time? Also I am wondering is there any way to shoot slow motion, I did not see fast enough video but maybe missed something as well. Thanks for any help

Yeah, it is set for five min tweny six or so seconds on HD if I go for standard and lower quality I can get seven to eight min. Not enough for what I want to do. Oh well I guess I should have asked more questions. That said I love the camera I get truly great photos and even though short the video looks great.

There is no way to shoot slow motion that I'm aware of, but maybe there's a post processing program that can slow the frame refresh rate? OK, I admit it, I'm totally shooting in the dark (no pun intended!) here.

I wonder if SDXC cards will eventually allow you to record more than 4GB in one go, as they use exFAT32 instead of FAT32? I am guessing you will still be capped by a <30min capture to avoid Euro import duties on video recorders?

I had not thought about the import duties, the Canon 5D is right at 30 min, I cant see any need of having to go over that for anything I do. Heck the 5.5 min on my K5 is good for just about everything I shoot except one. It will be ineresting to see how things play out.

To shoot in slow motion you have to have a camera that will shoot a faster frame rate. You can do fast motion by speeding up the frame rate with your editing software but I think the fastest frame rate is probably going to be 30fps for the K5.

I found that I can shoot up to just under ten min of HD if I set the qualitiy down and that is fine. Now my problem is I cannot seem to get Adobe Premiere Elements 9 to recognize the format from my K5, anyone have any thoughts on this. While I have spent many years as a photographer the video end is quite new and I know next to nothing.

True about the smaller files on a video of most kinds. I will be shooting academic lectures while it is possible to shoot five min clips it would be better to be able to do longer ones. I think that nine min will be fine though so we will see.

If you're just taking a video of a lecture: set the resolution and quality as low as you can stand it. Quality of 1 star is still very good. In a lecture the whole point is the sound right?

4GB is not a limit imposed by Pentax, it is a limitation of the FAT32 filesystem.

Your card is too slow. There are a number of threads here on the forum that indicate which cards eventually can't keep up and which ones are fine. Don't forget that "Class" ratings etc don't tell the whole story.

You can be able to take long stints of video with the K5. Ironically, one of the tests is to take 30 min of video with a new camera to check for spots on a sensor.

May I ask where in the K-5 Manual, or in any materials produced by Pentax, does Pentax recommend this technique?

Sounds like a good way to screw up your camera and/or poof your warranty to me... M
