What's happening to all those k-5's being returned?

It seems that many forum members have tried and returned one or more k-5's due to sensor stain or front focus. What happens to these camera bodies? Are the circuit boards or bodies reused in manufacture of 'new' units? Can the seial number of a body be changed if returned from stock before initial sale? Would there be any way to distinguish a previously unsold body returned and rebuilt to replace the sensor and circuit board from a unit built only 'once' at the initial production run? Intersted in experience based info rather than speculation.

here is what Sigma does - when they decide to replace your lens instead of repairing (whether that will be replaced by new or fixed lens - another story) they will just peel the serial number from the old one and stick it to the new one... personal experience with Sigma service center in Ronkonkoma, NY when I was trying to get 17-70/2.8-4.5 w/o decentering... 2 roundtrips.

That does not explain what is done with the returned item, however. If it was truly dead-in-the-box unused I would not have a problem with them "redoing" it at the factory to "new" condition.

From what I've heard:
1. A firmware fix for the FF issue is on the way
2. Stained sensors are simply being cleaned, no other changes are made to the camera

That's very interesting, Adam. I just today exchanged email with the K-5 Product Specialist at Pentax USA, who I sent a detailed description and samples displaying the FF issue, and got the impression that there is still no confirmation that the problem does indeed exist.

In response to my question as to whether there has been any progress on solving the FF issue, I received the following reply: "Test images and a description of the issue as reported have been submitted to PENTAX in Japan for review. Since any preliminary test data or results are not announced, I would not have this information. If an actual issue is identified, further information could be available."

In any case, I hope your information is correct.

Woo! Good News

As to the OPs question, I don't know myself. Why do you ask? Planning a trip to Japan and wanted to hang around the dumpsters out the back of Pentax in the hopes of getting a returned camera?

But more than likely, if they do offer new cameras, they would refurbish the stained sensor (cleaning/replacing sensor) then sell them as refurbished stock.

What are the outlets that sell refurbished stock? Might be cheaper than the airfare to japan to check out the dumpsters -

Has anyone purchased a K-5 through Amazon warehouse deals? Maybe that's where the unsuspected returned ones go...

Of course it is possible.
A Sensor exchange needs approx 2-3 hours including new calibrating of the complete camerasystem.
Shuttersync,WB,Exp.metering........have to be new calibrated and than it is a new camera

Zackspeed ... Is it possible they change the whole main board (with sensor attached)? The camera I got back from Pentax Canada has a very early serial number but a recent production date that doesn't match the serial number at all.

I don't know where you got your info but I'm pretty sure you're definitely wrong on #2.

My camera was sent to Pentax Japan via my local Pentax agent. When it was returned to me, the exterior camera shell was the same (serial number intact and unchanged) but the sensor was definitely replaced and the shutter count reset to zero. In other words, some parts of the camera's innards were replaced but the magnesium body was unchanged, which makes perfect sense.

I did knowing full well that it would have a very high probability of having a stained sensor. Within an hour of receiving it, it was on its way to Pentax for replacement.

Yes,itīs possible.
I can ask how it works exactly next days.
Normaly the complete Sensorunit will be changed, not only the pure Sensor.
Best Regards,Andy
