I was in Rydas' Parramatta Road, Sydney store on Monday buying a new camera bag.
I noticed that they had a K-x and a K-r on display but no K-5. I mentioned to the sales guy about the lack of a display model.

His reply was....We never get the chance to put one on display. As soon as a shipment comes in they are all sold.

If that is being a failure I am sure Pentax wouldn't mind more failures like that.
What is sad about that is that I think it would be the same here in America, but you can't find a Pentax hardly anywhere here. I hope Pentax will correct this, they are missing a ton of sales by not being on retailers shelves. Americans spend more money than most anyone, that's why we are all broke!.....looks like Pentax would try to capture some of it with a great camera like the K5?
Even broke Americans spend money...money they don't have, it is the "American Way".
Regards!

I've read lots of posts, particularly from the US, about lack of retail penetration. The situation in Australia is appalling. At least Ryda, mentioned by Ivor K Ecks (is he now Ivor K Five?), would have one on the shelf if they had time to put one there before they were sold. None of the big box retailers sell anything of Pentax at all. Camera House is probably Australia's biggest specialist photography retail chain. I have tried the three closest franchises only to be told 'we don't stock the K5 because we can't sell them' (Catch the irony there?) Each one offered to get one on special order for me, but I said that, if I can't touch one, I won't buy. Much of the problem is probably with CR Kennedy, the local distributor, who don't advertise in magazines and don't do any promotion that I have seen. The result is that we never see an article or test or review of any Pentax gear in the media. It is sad really. A lot of people are missing out on a couple of superb cameras.

Rod, you need to make a trip to the big smoke mate. Every camera shop I have been in to in Melbourne (with the exception of Teds' but they aren't a 'real' camera shop anymore, are they?) has k-5's and K-r's on the shelf. Even the Croydon franchise of Camera House. Take a trip to the Elizabeth St 'Camera Zone' and you will find K-5's everywhere.

Wiz, thanks for that.
BUT... breaking my own advice have now fixed myself up without touching one!
Ordered from DCW yesterday 10:00am, delivered to my door 9:05am this morning.
Croydon Camera House might be different to Albury, Shepparton and Bendigo!
(I actually belly-ached to CRK about the issue and Clem Kennedy offered to send a no obligation sample to one of the three stores - I declined 'cause I don't get to those three towns often enough. I was going to wait until I got to the big smoke, but got impatient.)
As an aside, I actually bought my DS sight-unseen from Croydon CH.

The best view of Melbourne is in the rear vision mirror.

What was it Sydney folk used to say? The best thing to come out of Melbourne is the road....

Glad you got a K-5, next time I trip up to the border we can get together and compare notes. It's truly a remarkable piece of design and engineering.

You get it in Trondheim as well. I've checked!

How is the K-5 sales going?
Last summer, when asiatic tourists were visiting Norwegian fjords, those of them using slr's surprisingly often had a (vivid clolured) k-x, leaving the impression it must have been selling quite well (or was it just me having a keen eye for it..).

Why do you call Melbourne '...the big smoke'?

Just curious...

Thanks,

Bill

It's a generic term for big cities - goes back to the industrial revolution when the big cities of Britain were shrouded in coal smoke. We still use the phrase in Canada, too - Toronto is the Big Smoke.

That's neat. I'm going to chose to adopt that phrase and bring it to the US!

The k5 is my 3rd digital pentax SLR body. It is clearly superior to its predecessors.
