I never understood this. Why do you want to turn off the AF assist light? It's there to help with AF. If you turn it off, you're disabling one of the features the camera has to make AF better.

Smeggy, I hope you have good luck, and end up satisfied. You have been so frustrated, it is only fair that you get some satisfaction from this firmware, and I hope you do, sincerely!

If not, time to try another K5? Sort of reminds me of this old girl back in High School......I tried my damnest, showered her with affection, bought her nice gifts, roses, and fine perfume. No matter what I did, she just never "worked for me", but she "worked fine" for my buddies. That's when I discovered that all is not fair in love and war.......or cameras.
Best Regards!

At the risk of being repetitive, all I expect is for the AF of the K-5 to be at least as accurate as my old K100DS when shooting in similar lighting conditions. None of the three K-5s I owned lived up to that expectation. Is that too much to ask?

Now that there is an AF fix, I'll try again.

Have you tested them side by side? or do you just have some recollections about K100 capabilities?

My K100 is not even closely as accurate as my K-5 is.

But my K100 would benefit a lot having focus correction setting, but actually I have no need for correction settings in my K-5 either, so they are comparable as is. K100 just focuses incorrectly and K-5 not.

The FF problem has been solved, in my case at least. I did not have a problem with it before, but that's because I didn't own the K-5 for long enough to run into its limitations.

Well, I made some before & after shots to prove it. I used the DA* 55/1.4 SDM wide open.

Can someone tell me if the firmware updates are cumulative? I havent updated with 1.02 and wonder about jumping straight to 1.03.

[edit] never mind, its in the readme.

I jumped from 1.01 straight to 1.03 and that worked flawlessly.

Yes, they are cumulative. You can install 1.03 over 1.00, 1.01 or 1.02.

Yes, tested side-by-side, salme light, same lens, mirror lockup, etc. I posted a few samples here and a complete set are on my flickr page. The side by sides were also sent to the K-5 Product Specialist at Golden, Colorado and forwarded to Pentax Japan. So yes, I know very well how the K-5 stacked up against my K-5 samples.

Today I got both a new stain-free k-5 body AND a firmware update! I wasn't born on Christmas eve, so I don't know what it is like to have the combined joy of both Christmas and a birthday at the same time - but this must be close!

thanks for the nice empirical evidence Asahiflex. looks very promising, but its hard to tell just how low the EV is without the full exposure info.

The EXIF for the two 1.03 versions says 1/6-1/8 at f1.4 ISO 800. That would be at, or a little less than EV 1.

In the last photo, I used ISO 800, 1/6s at f/1.4. That's around EV0-1 I think...
