I'll be updating mine right away.

Seems to be no stains and it outperforms my 7D in every way save AF. Posted some pictures in the thread below for comparison. I am very impressed with Pentax at this moment in time.

I'll install the 1.03 and never know about the FF issue.

AF is really good compared to k7, where K7 used to be indecisive now it just hits and locks (just like 7D) AF-C grabs things as quick as the SDM motor can keep up. It feels just like the 7D but with a slower lens motor and that is a huge compliment for Pentax as the 7D is one of the best AF camera's out there. Great work Pentax.

1/8 second, f1.4, ISO 100 would be EV 4. At ISO 800 it would be EV 1, so 1/6 would be between EV 1 and EV 0.

Installation went without problems. The only thing was that at unzipping the firmware file there was a question whether I wanted to go on with the unzip even when the file was "encrypted". I answered yes, and then it worked just fine.

This is starting to look pretty promising. And my credit card is beginning to itch!

This camera is amazing. It's a really overcast day and this thing is killing the 7D in shadow detail, add to that snow and the contrast blows highlights very easy. Pentax knocked this out of the park.

Mine arrived stain free from BH and with the 1.03 looks like FF free as well. I hope Pentax gains market share with this as they deserve it.

I have zero regrets selling the Canon at this point.

Actually, Christine never said this problem did not exist. She has said on multiple occasions that she was able to reproduce Jolepp's battery test. She just said it was minor and didn't really affect her. So before you start gloating, get your facts straight.

Can't we all just get along? Is anyone gloating about all the naysayers saying this was a hardware issue or Pentax will never fix it? Will some of you EVER be happy, or will you just go on to find something else catastrophically wrong with the camera?
Finally, someone who actually reads (and understands) my posts! Thank you.

Unfortunately, I was also one of the "naysayers" who think it's a hardware/design issue that may never get fixed.

And it seems that with this latest firmware the problem has been reduced but is still there, so it seems more likely that it will never be fixed completely.

So those that expect a camera to be "perfect" may never be happy with this camera. But it's likely that less people will notice the issue and complain about it.

Those who accept that all cameras have flaws and either work around those flaws or minimise the impact during usage will of course continue to enjoy their cameras.

does anybody know what are the specs Pentax has for the AF-system? what are the limits of it in terms of EV?

I am asking this because for me it seems that some of us have quite exaggerated expectations. There is fellows who are complaining that his/her K-5 FF in -1 EV !

I think that any camera maker has not so far promised this kind of performance, has they?
Well I wouldn't complain about it FFing @ -1EV, but I do want it to perform at least as good as my K20D.

The specs are in the K-5 manual

@LeeRunge if i remember correctly, stains manifested itself when things got warm--try shooting some video and maybe engage liveview for extended sessions. heh, kinda sucks to always be wondering in the back of your head, if the stains will appear. keep on shooting!

Okay, did a quick test under a tungsten halogen lamp. It seems to focus accurately until a bit above EV 2 (0.8s @iso 100 and f2), then the focus jumps in front of the subject.
But my K-5 has really bad FF before 1.03, starting at about EV 6. It will be replaced because of stains anyway so I'm not too worried…

So I did a quick test, shoot hand held at four different targets in my room with the Sigma 17-70 at 17mm. First with 1.02 and got four severely out of focus pictures (around EV3).

Loaded 1.03 and shoot four new pictures, all in focus! Wohoo! It seems to work.

Well, I could still get one or two shoots out of focus if I was really trying but it went from useless to pretty OK. At least that is what I think after 10 minutes of testing.

So far, Pentax USA doesn't know any more about the latest FW update than is posted on the Pentax Japan web site. I emailed the K-5 Product Specialist at Pentax USA. I was advised to look to the online forums to see it it was effective.

"The only information on the K-5 version 1.03 firmware update is the text information included with the download on the PENTAX Japan Web site. Reports of a low light front focus issue along with sample photos had been submitted to PENTAX in Japan for review and as you mention, one of the changes included in the version 1.03 update “ Improved the accuracy of auto focus in low-intensity light condition.” I don’t have any additional details on the update but “real world” feedback on the update should be available soon from sources such as the PENTAX DSLR forum on dpreview.com as K-5 users download and install the update."

The sample photos mentioned above include samples I sent to Pentax USA about a month ago. It must really suck to be the unloved step-child of Pentax Japan

I gave it a good look over but will play with video and try again. I'm pretty confident that the issue is resolved. If it does pop up I'll return it and get another. I won't sell the 7D right away encase anything happens.

I would like to hear some first-hand accounts from folks who have installed it before I do the same. Blame my cautious nature (and the fact that I haven't really had any problems with the camera)
I still run on Version 1 with my K10. Maybe ignorance is bliss.
