For a Squirrel shooter.....
Sigma 17-70 OS HSM 2.8-4.0 + Bigma 50-500........You can shoot the whole world, and all the Squirrels in it!

My Bigma, for the first time, focuses fast ans accurate on the K5....no hunting, no gear grinding! It's heaven! Squirrels love it too....no more long poses while they wait for focus to lock.
Best Regards!

I did see some of your squirrel photos! I've taken a couple myself with my Oly E620. My longest reach was with a 70-300 though. Definitely not a Bigma!

The quality is definitely not as good as the primes though, but decent for a zoom.
Of course it is hard to rival the Limiteds in terms of image quality, but the 50-135 comes dangerously close, even when you are a pixel peeper. Especially during longer trips or vacations, it is hard to justify all the lens changing when you can keep only one lens attached. And 2.8 is not bad, especially with the K-5.

So when my main purpose for the day is photography, I go with 15,(35),43,77, but especially when there are others who would have to wait for me, the DA* is just more convenient.

Nice 21/43/100.. I've already got the 43, am in the midst of deciding between the 100 and 77.. probably end up with the 100 for double duty portrait/macro.. but I'm leaning towards the DA 15 over the 21.

And here I thought the one I got right was the Quantaray 28-70 Macro... after its rave reviews!

man, did I also agonize over my choice of lenses when I got my K-5! I went with the 21 and the 43. I'm also thinking of either the 77 or 100 someday, but I want to "need" one of them first - you know, if I feel I'm missing something by not having one of them (it would likely be the 77, but who knows...)

The size of your lens is going to attract attention, therefor i recommend the small and light and reasonably long and fastish DA70mm

When I bought the K-5, I also got the 31mm f /1.8 limited and the 50-135mm f/2.8, which gives me relatively fast 50mm and 70-200mm FF equivalent. This 2-lens combo works well on crop-sensor, but leaves me needing a wide and a Tele, maybe 20mm and 300mm f/4 DA. And, if I need macro or portrait, I have a couple choices.

The 31mm is an excellent focal length on my MZ-S film camera. On the K-5 it becomes a 50mm equivalent, which is useful, but I REALLY need a wider focal length for landscape, indoor, group photos and street.

Pentax has a sweet, "minimal" set of primes and WR zooms which makes it easy to get quality, inexpensive fast lenses on the crop-factor K-5. Since I have a FF MZ-S, I have to duplicate things a little, which means a 15mm wide for the K-5; the crop-factor and good high-ISO performance of the K-5 is very useful for telephoto.

Maybe the only thing we are missing from Pentax is a bird lens, like 400mm DA.

Sure the DA 70 is small, but if he's looking towards the 100mm he wants the range (and probably macro too) so the FA 77's extra 10.5mm (crop factored) range would probably be his second choice after the 100WR. And its not like the 77 is a monster in size either. But I don't think anyone will mistake someone holding up a K-5 to their face for a shot as a cell phone or something.. with or without a 100mm WR lens on it.

Thanks Chex! Totally what I was thinking with the 100. I ended up not getting the 18-135 as I'd originally planned. So the 100 will be serving as a short tele for me (plus some macro). I may yet change my mind.

WOW!!!

Scary.

You got it right.

Please give me six numbers, each number ranging from 00 to 99. I need to go buy some lottery tickets!

How did you come up with those three lenses?
Im a psychic

Well originally you wanted the 18-135 WR and the 43.

Someone guessed 15/43/77 (which is my combo by the way)
and you said only 1 of them is right.
So i knew it would be the 43 which is the mid-range, that leaves wide and tele.
On the wide end the 15 has been ruled out that leaves the 21.
And on the tele end i thought it would be the 100WR because thats a closer fit to the original range you wanted plus it has WR.

My only problem is that it's quite heavy, and needs a grip on the body to balance out the weight. K-5 + grip + 50-135 makes for a very bulky and heavy combo - well into Canon EOS-1D territory.
Uh, that's actually not that heavy of a combo... Try a 70-200mm lens + grip + flash! Now that gets a bit tiring!

For street photography, lite is king:

+1 on that.

Mine just arrived today. My first thought "OMG its huge...!" (mind you, my largest lens so far is the DA 35 macro). "And heavy!". And FAAAAR in terms of touch and feel of the limited primes.
