Switching from k-r to k-5

I received a k-r as a gift and have had nothing but troubles with Front Focus. I have taken it in to the Pentax shop several times (3 to be exact) and have not had the issue fixed (as it is a firmware problem). With no foreseeable update coming for the k-r I am thinking of selling the k-r and upgrading to the k-5.

I would like to know whether the k-5 firmware 1.03 has fixed the Front Focus issues for people who own the camera. I know there is great debate, I simply want to know - did it work for you?

A firmware fix for the K-r is coming, just so you know. AFAIK the K-5 FW did fix the problem, although some users are still reporting that it didn't. Hopefully it's not the placebo effect that we're seeing.

I seem to have very little problems with FF using my 43mm Ltd for the most part, the 18-135 only seems to get use outside. I say go for the upgrade, K-5 is obviously a much more capable camera.. just not in as many flashy colors

No the 1.03 FW didn't fix the problem in all K-5s. It ddn't fix it in mine.

I just wonder how many of these focus issues are because people haven't calibrated the dioptre adjustment on the eyepiece to their eye? Pretty basic stuff I know, but judging by the number of times we have to mention viewfider calibration in our club it catches beginners out everytime when moving from point and shoot to a DSLR with an optical viewfinder.

But wouldn't that just look out of focus in the viewfinder? If it's focusing correctly, as long as the point is what you wanted to focus, the pictures should still be focused correctly, right?

I use the red IR confirmation box just as a guide for manual focusing, I still would prefer a split prism like a Katz Eye
