Replacement K-5 arrived today from CRIS

. . . right at the end of the two weeks they said would be needed for the turnaround.

Old S/N 396XXX (manufacture date 12-10-10). New S/N 383XXX (manufacture date 2-4-11). I guess Pentax just recycles serial numbers or has some non-linear scheme.

Came with Ver. 1.03, shutter count 20. Sensor perfect -- not even a speck of dust. Camera obviously new, not a refurb.

But it didn't come in a new box with all new stuff. That's OK, I kept all that. . . but it didn't come with the battery that I sent with the old camera, just the throwaway 256K SD card used to show them the sensor stains. Nor did it come with the strap rings.

So I'll have to email CRIS and ask for the forgotten items. Good thing I have an extra battery.

CRIS replied to my email within minutes and promised to send a battery and the strap things out right away. Can't get better service than that.

I don't think the replacement is a repair -- not with a 2/4/11 build date. The service bit in the EXIF was not reset, and 20 shutter actuations does not seem like a lot.

Possibly Japan is now sending replacement camera bodies only (no box or accouterments) to the US repair center.

Glad to hear CRIS worked out for you. I've had similar good luck with them.
If you call them after they receive your camera they'll give a tracking number that can be used to check the status of your repair. I thought that was a nice touch.

Enjoy your shiny K-5!

Turnaround time *at CRIS" was two weeks after CRIS received the camera, as they said it would be. It actually took an additional eight days . . . four for the UPS ground trip Chicago-Arizona, four for the return trip. Figure a total of three weeks.
