I'm asking this somewhat jokingly, but I've been trying to conceive ways in which I could justify a K-5 upgrade for myself (as a K-x user). That being said, WOULD you rather:

a) Own a K-x with an ultrawide (sigma 10-20mm), DA 35mm macro, and DA70mm
- or -
b) Have a K-5 with just one lens (probably the DA35mm)

Mmm... I think, having used the K-5, I'd go with it. Although I'd probably take the kit lens to start with, rather than the DA35mm. The high-ISO performance is so good that you could get by with the kit lens for a long time.

I would go with the K5. I assure you the K5/DA35 combo is simply awesome.

If I had a k-x, I might be able to hold off on upgrading until the next model (k-3?, k-z?). You are already getting pretty great high-ISO performance.

My biggest gripe with the k-x specs (I've never personally used one) was the lack of focus indicator, but I don't think that's enough to justify going to the k-5.

I would rather do b). However...I also wouldn't spend the money on a 10-20mm lens so you have to determine what's more important to you.

I like the K-5 for it's speed, ergonomics, build quality, and of course IQ and low light ability. However...if the ultrawide is more important to you than a faster, heftier camera...I don't think you lose a whole lot of IQ by sticking with the K-x.

The DA35 is glued onto my K-5 right now. Fantastic combo. I came from a K20 and I haven't picked up the old beast since getting the 5.

Well my situation is that a) is my current setup and I'm trying to justify the k-5 purchase by forcing myself to sell a lens or two if I'm going to do it. I was just wondering whether people thought it was worth it to have limited flexibility for better IQ among other things.
And I'm sure the DA 35 would be magnificent with a K5 O_O

I was saving up some cash for lenses -- a DA* 60-250, or maybe a couple of limiteds. But when the K-5 came out I just KNEW I had to replace my K20D instead, because the K-5 directly addressed my primary complaints about the K20D (high-ISO performance, inconsistent tungsten light focusing, live view zoomability).

I got the K-5. Yeah, I'd love to have those lenses, but I have no regrets overall.

I agree with this. Get the kit lens as it's a handy range and you'll have a WR kit. The DA35 (or any of them) will give you a nice "go to" lens if you need maximum image quality.

As much as the K-5 is the way to go to advance your photographic journey to the next level, it'd be good to know what you primarily want/like to shoot, as it may not be amenable to a single 35mm prime lens. Nevertheless, I do like the idea of a single prime lens kit at the start, especially if you have something like a DA 18-55 WR as backup for in case you want the weather sealing or a wide angle perspective.

Later on you may find you need a particular focal length and need to save up for another lens. The K-5 will provide the extra resolution and dynamic range that will make these lenses shine in tougher situations.

What I shoot varies but it is primarily product shots, street photography, and snapshots. I hardly ever need anything in the telephoto range, though an ultrawide does come in handy from time to time. I'd say with the 3 lenses I own, I use the DA 35mm 80% of the time. Maybe it's snobbery on my part but ever since going with the DA primes I couldn't bring myself to using the kit lens, even as a back up. I'd probably rather save up for something down the line.
