Older guy with a new K-5

A pretty big leap for me from the K10D.
Not that I don't give very high praise to the K10.

Much attention has already been directed at the high ISO quality, DR, faster focus, etc.
And I agree with most all that has been said, it's great!
I really like the finer grain of the higher ISO's, makes my slower lenses much more usable.

A huge thing for me is the status screen on the back display.
My eyes ain't what they used to be, and the display is a blessing!
And I like that the top display lights up with each half shutter press.

I find the menu to be very intuitive, and the button layout pretty much perfect.

Probably won't use the movie mode much, but very happy to have that option.
Live view helps keep me off my arthritic knees for close up flower, etc, shots.
Turned off the beep confirmation, can't hear the blamed thing anyway.

I'm just a simple jpeg shooting hobbyist that thinks the K5 is the best thing since sliced bread!
Hope this helps some older fence riders take the leap, IMO, you won't regret it!

A few of my first K5 grab shots in the backyard with my old DAL 18/55 kit lens:

The filters are fun to play with too!

That 1st one is fantastic. Shows great color, nice & sharp, and a pretty good DOF. And with a kit lens to boot. Welcome, and look forward to seeing more as you learn what a great camera you have.

G'day young fella, yeah the K-5 is something else. You now doubt grew up through the film age and like me probably resisted the digital thing until it was the only way to go. I have no regrets and with the K-5 doing things film couldn't touch I'm hooked. Only thing I miss is the darkroom smells and 6x7 transparencies.

Good Luck,

David

Congratulations on your K5. I owned the K10D and loved it, but the limitations were troublesome at times. The K5 seems to be almost unlimited in its abilities, and delivers what no other Pentax has been able to achieve to date.
I am also a "casual shooter", but avid ate shooting often and plentiful. The K5 has opened new avenues of shooting pleasure for me, and given me confidence in areas where I was once a little shaky.
Enjoy your K5, even us old guys can enjoy a machine such as this one! Shoot often and plentiful, I always think about Today.....it will never come again.
Best Regards!

Welcome to the K-5 club

I would almost say exactly as David has... was a Nikon film guy and I held off going digital simply because I was so disappointed to have had my gear stolen and no insurance right before a big trip overseas.

Brought a point and shoot firstly then when the bug hit me I looked at all options and Pentax glass won me over, then along comes the K-5 and wow what a camera.

Could not be any more pleased with my system and the modern digital results

Neil

Thanks kindly for all of the welcomes!

David,
I don't miss the darkroom smells as much as I miss seeing an image appear, like magic, before my eyes.
Never was very good at dodging and burning,
now I'm not very good at PP, but I have fun trying!

Still finding features on the K5, and lovin' it more every day!

Agreed, I can still remember the thrill of seeing my first print appear at the tender age of 15.

I don't know what you use for PP but I find Lightroom does the job for me and doesn't cost a fortune to upgrade every couple of years.
