I can vouch for the phenomenal DR the K-5 has at ISO 80.
High contrast scenes are hardly a problem for it, notably recording shadow and highlight detail with more clarity than compared to both my K10D and K20D.
I can't give objective measures or post examples, but it's definitely no gimmick. The K-5 sensor's DR has real life benefits in photography.
agree, it's a undisputed fact. According to DxO, k-5 dynamic range is even better than 645D - however k-r/x & 645D are very close in dynamic range and really want to see how they compare in real life, may be some can shoot and share same scene with k-5 vs k-x/r.

I don't have/used K-x or K-r so no comparison. I did use K-7 so my world in DR got a little bigger with the K-5.

A picture with everything in it, taken with my K-5 Silver, FA*85mm at f2,2 and iso 100. With K-7 this would have lead to either black without detail, or white without detail or maybe even both.
This photo is worth a thousand words. Thx.

At the same ISO settings, DxO says ~1 stop?

Right. The only thing is that base iso for kx is really 200, while for the K5 it goes all the way down to 80. Comparing base isos, there is a two stop difference, although from 200 on, it drops to only a stop.

not sure if these help or not but both taken with my KR with a Sigma 70-300 DG APO and resized from RAW in Photoshop to upload here.
Picked these 2 because of the contrasting light and dark backgrounds in each.
ISO100, F/6.3, 1/500th +1.3 Exposure hand held

ISO100, F/18, 1/15th hand held

This one with same combo of KR and Sigma 70-300 but I had forgotten I had been using it indoors at ISO1600 and not changed it back
ISO1600, F/18 and 1/3200th hand held.
I have used one pass of Topaz Denoise 5 at RAW Medium on this one.

I would like to know what the difference is between the DR of ISO 80 and ISO 160 with highlight correction turned on.

I too am loving the ease of post processing with K-5 files. It's almost magical.

The difference is a shift towards the highlights at the cost of a little DR reach in the dark parts. As far as I know the total DR is more-or-less the same in total. You gaina full stop in highlights.
