Nice! You could even streamline them with a mill like that.

If you have what I'm thinking of, you can draw out the design in CAD and program the mill to cut it out. If that's the case, it would be good to add a small tab (on the opposite side of the Ee-S tab for K5/7) for easier installation. I don't have the measurements, but with dlacouture's dimesions you could figure it out by looking at the picture he linked in his post.

Note concerning the diagrams I linked above : they show the upward face of the focus screen.
So, on a K5, the tab will be located on the left once the screen is in place.

Gimbal: please let us know how the milling goes. I imagine you could do pretty well cutting down screens for people who aren't adventurous enough to DIY.

OK, I tried it in my MZ-6, and it seems quite good too...

The factory screen can show a f/2.4 DoF/Brightness only, whereas the Canon EE-S goes down to nearly f/1.7.

Metering is unchanged with my FA50/1.4, so it means the screens have similar brightness at f/1.4.
Strange thing is that the hexagonal effect is much more pronounced in FF than in APS-C. I really had a hard time seeing it in my K5, but in the MZ-6 it leaped at me...

I'll try with a K20 today (I cut one for my brother)...

That's really odd about the hexagonal effect. Perhaps the magnification of the VF is higher?

On the K-5, can you see a difference in VF DOF (using the optical preview button) between 1.4, 1.7, and 2.0? The lens I have the hardest time focusing is my Voigtlander 58/1.4. With my current screen (Ec-A), switching between 1.4 and 1.7 gives no change in the viewfinder, and the change between 1.7 and 2.0 is so small it doesn't help with focusing.

Between 1.4 and 1.7, the difference is really small, but you can see the viewfinder darkening slightly...
But it means the screen is able to differentiate those two values...

I'm interested in this ee-S screen, but I need a clarification : if this screen is a bit less bright, does it mean it's not that good for low light photography?

Philippe : my personal feeling is that it's only slightly darker with f/2-f/2.8 lenses, by about 0.5Ev, so in effect the brightness difference is not a point. At f/1.4 and f/4 it's the same brightness than the stock screen, and below f/4 it will be brighter...
Now, being finely grained (nothing like the usual screens), I find it really better in low-light situations...

Now, Canon also make a split screen with this matte finish, IIRC...

If by chance you go south towards Aix or Marseille, I can let you play with my K5 just to see how it suits you...
