Best screen ever for manual focus : Canon ee-S!!!

I have ordered the unetched S type for my K-5 IIs. All my lenses are manual focus. I'm really excited to see how it performs once it arrives. Thanks to all who have shared their experiences in this thread.

Unless you have lots of fast manual lenses where you need the much better focusing, IMO the erratic exposure is too much of a compromise. The dark viewfinder - again my opinion - is less of an issue.

The screen doesn't go dark with the 15/4. I use the combo a lot. You apparently get some underexposure, but it's pretty minor, IMO. I didn't even notice it until prompted to test for it. If you shoot RAW then it's really not an issue. For me, it would take some pretty slow lenses (at least f/5.6, maybe more like f/8) to become an issue. So if you have and use a lot of lenses that slow then think twice about the screen.

To clarify, the screen will be dimmer than the stock screen with slower lenses, but it never "goes dark" or blacks out suddenly like the center of a split-screen can.

basically ive got 2 fast MF lenses.the pentax A-50mm f1.4 and samyang 85mm f1.4. havent done a lot of practising with manual focusing and always have a hard time focusing wide open.sometimes i nail the shot and sometimes its slightly oof.might wait then and practise a bit more and then i can make up my mind. which screen is better? katzeye or the ee-s?

Exactly. The view gets progressively dim in the manner that those of us who cut our teeth on stopped-down metering 45 years ago are so very familiar with.

I thought about getting that one too, until I realized using the stock screen in my lightbox that I couldn't centre it properly without the basic grid lines.

Nah, this is nothing like those meaningless wars of religion. Just a bit confusion as the topic of erratic exposure was thrown into the mix.

Wow, long thread. I haven't read all of it but see a few recent questions about how dark the screen gets. I have the ee-S screen in my K-5 II (also had one in my K-r). I am currently sitting in a room in daytime with slat blinds half closed. So it's not exactly bright but not dark either, in the middle.

I stick a manual lens on so I can adjust the aperture manually. My personal view is that once you hit F8 it's doable but starting to get tricky. Anything F5.6 or wider is fine. Outside then past F8 would be fine. Given that for any lens with the aperture levers you'll be doing your focussing wide open you'd have to have a seriously slow lens for it to be an issue.

Must admit, I haven't tried this experiment in the dark but have never had an issue with the viewfinder being too dark in normal use. This includes using my 18-135 which is an F3.5-5.6 lens.

Not very scientific but I hope that helps someone.

Hi Guys,
Are using the stock shims with the new screen ?
I haven't put mine in the K-5iis yet.
The Ees screen seemed to be thicker than the stock one when I had it in the K-5.
The focus was never quite right but I couldn't be buggered cutting tiny post it note strips for shims

I bought the full size Ees and cut it down myself so no shims came with it
