Switching to K5

Hello everybody!

This is my first message in the PentaxForums, so I hope you will excuse me for a well known question about the stained sensor issue.

I read lately that the possibility to get a stained sensor is significantly reduced for the K5's produced in 2011. Are there any recent experiences from new users to verify this?

Is it finally safer to order the K5 silver, only for the reason that this edition is more carefully constructed?

Thank you in advance,
Paschalis

If you look in the K5 serial number database on this forum, you will see that there are very few problems in recent months. The stain issue is generally considered to be one of the past. I don't think there is much difference in stain risk between the standard and the silver versions, provided you are buying a recent standard one (which will be the case with any of the known and reputable dealers).

I have had 2 stained K-5s and they were both pre 2011.
The one I have now is fine (March 2011).

Buy from B&H or Adorama and you will have no issues with stains. From what I see, and I do get around on the internet, almost all new K5 users are absolutely thrilled with their new K5's, and any other issues are no more common than on other brands.

Enjoy and welcome! Post your new experiences here, we are mostly a friendly group. There is a guy here, Otis, that is a little Squirrely...but otherwise, we are here to help if needed.
Best Regards!

Thank you for your replies!
I will order the camera and lenses from Europe (probably Germany), as there are additional taxes for equipment shipping from US.
If a K5 silver is available, then I would rather go for it, considering then the price difference as an "insurance" (besides, it is mostly impressive in appearence)
I will of course post my impressions after receivng the equipment

Regards

The question I have is when will we see Pentax release all of these factory refurbished K-5 bodies. They have to be holding a few thousand of them. How many were returned for stains? How many were returned for FF issues?

There will be some very good deals on the K-5 this fall.

What Pentax has indicated is that all 100 US copies have been sold. Maybe they'll make more- but they haven't done so with limited bodies in the past.

Sounds like it could be a l-o-n-g wait - and that you might have more success calling around the small town dealers, who are more likely to have one or two pieces in. Sorry

I bought my K5 in Feb 2011, and its excellent in every way. No staining, no focus problem, the only problem is the guy with the big head on the end of the viewfinder

I shoot live play rehearsals for a local theatre with some other photographers. we then use the pics for decorating their lobby or the media guy uses them with newspapers or online info. I got some pics of a guy adjusting spotlights in the dark overhead, and some other lowlight backstage stuff, that I couldn't have done with my previous camera - i'm very happy! Well over a 1000 pics with the most recent play, and over 90% in focus when there was enough light to even develop them.

So if you can't get the limited camera, be happy and buy the standard K5 - its a very special camera IMO.
