There is a different path for solar system (planets, sun, moon) and DSO (deep sky objects). For me, I use registax 5/6 and autostackert 2 (AS2!), similar results, but mostly it depends on the raw data. AS2! is simpler to use but it does not have wavelets so after stack I go to registax 6 and do the wavelets for sharper details.

@Suhndog, I suggest a book called Backyard Astronomers Handbook by Dickinson and Dyer to build a foundation. The book is only 1/3 photography but the rest of it is great background material to help understand the skies. There's also backyardastronomy.com

Local astronomy clubs can also be a great source of information.

In terms of software Registax and Autostakkert are for solar system processing. I haven't read much documentation for either one, but they were simple enough for me to figure out.

Deep sky work gets more complex. DSS includes a pretty good online help file that explains features and theory. Nebulosity has a similar PDF manual.

Camera:Pentax K5
Mount:Astrotrc TT320
Lens:Ricoh 135/2.8@F4

Stack of 13 210Second exposures with ISO800,total 45min under the light pollution.
K5 did a good performance and it's not worse than my previous camera canon 1100DA for astrophotography.

Here is an example of what you can get with a single frame exposure these days. This is Comet C/2011 L4 PanSTARRS which is now almost twice as far away from planet Earth as Earth is from the sun. K5 IIs, O-GPS1, 45 seconds, Takumar 135/2.8 @ f/4, ISO200, EV +3.8, made into a monochrome for better contrast, a touch of raw denoise and a lot of tone curve manipulation. When the comet was at its closest approach this past spring, we saw it in profile. The Earth has now passed through its orbital plane and we are starting to see it from the other side, "looking back" at it. The comet's apparent motion is to the left of the frame opposite that of its long "anti-tail" which points to the sun. There is no doubt that stacking improves the signal to noise ratio. But this is still a useable frame.

Great shots, guys! Here are a couple shots I took of PanSTAARS [My camera is a K5 with 'kit' DA 18-55mm lens]:
Here's the details of the one dated 3/14/13 [large image]: f/8, 55mm, 13 second exp., ISO-160, 'Pattern' metering mode, focal length = 82.
The details on the one dated 3/13/13 are: f/8, 55mm, 7.4 second exp., ISO-160, 'Pattern' metering mode, focal length = 82.
The smaller image needed a bit of curve adjustment.. I wanted to bring out the details a bit since it was darker outside when I took it.
Each image was just taken once [no stacking, etc]. and on a tripod. -- Marc

The foreground blur suggests some sort of tracking. O-GPS1 or some form of equatorial?

That Astrotrc TT320 seems to do a good job. Thanks for sharing.

@tonypysm and mattb123: Just want to join in on the praise of your pictures. Truly beautiful and stunning!

tonypysm: You speak about high-level light pollution. Well, everything is relative but can you describe your observing site a bit closer. I don't think I could produce anything like your pictures (granted that I had your skills) anywhere near where i live.
