i like the color balance on the reprocessed on ExFinn! M42 is such a bear to process, too much dynamic range in it.
Thanks.
That is a different image from a lot better seeing night. I also resorted to using a light pollution filter (Lumicon Deep Sky filter), made a huge difference in eliminating sky-glow from sodium lights.
And yes, M42 has a wealth of data to capture and process, specially for a beginner like me.

p.s. I might be hooked on astro...

M82 SN2014J Supernova

Only got off one 60" exposure at the telescopes native f-ratio (f10) before clouds came in and obscured my view. Hope to get a much better set of exposures soon.

Seti: nice capture. I read there was a supernova in M82 but didn't have a chance to look . Brighter than I thought. Thanks for posting so soon. Good luck on your next try

Nice, Seti. First clear night I will be trying for M82. Next week will be better as we close in on New Moon. The feeling is that if anything the supernova should brighten for the next few weeks.

Very good shot for such short time exposure. Can you tell what aperture, and ISO?

In some of my own research on this topic, the big key is avoiding star trails (unless you want them). The wider the lens the better. There's a formula...

600 ÷ focal length = exposure time (in seconds) to avoid star trails.

So for example... I shot some with the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 lens. It's effective focal length is 21mm on the Kx (the camera I was using at the time).

600 ÷ 21mm = 28.5 seconds.

So I shot at 30 seconds, wide open, ISO 1600 or 3200.

These aren't the most beautiful results, but it was my first attempt!

I'm looking forward to trying this again with the K-5... once I get a nice wide lens again
WOW!! Amazing!

A K-3 shot of SN2014J from last night is here:

Perhaps it would be better to have a camera model-agnostic astro thread?

that kind of thread would be great! I'd live to see how all the Pentax line does!

Ah, forgot about the social groups. I suppose this is the way Adam preserves the camera model structure of the forums but lets us play around all we like in the groups. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm not sure if this is the proper thread to ask for advice, or if it's only for sharing results... so apologies if this is misplaced.

I've noticed from browsing this thread that many of you use the Pentax GPS1 and get some good results for tracking. I recently purchased a K-5 II and a Vivitar 13mm f/2.8 with the intent of doing some wide field astrophotography while on vacation in Mexico.

Some of my expectations:

-Initially, I want to capture wide-angle views of the Milky Way and stitch it (if necessary) with a long-exposure shot of the rocky beach where I'll be staying in Mexico, and with other landscapes
-Eventually, I'd like to move onto imaging with longer focal lengths such as 70mm, 200mm, and possibly higher. I never plan on mounting a telescope to the mount I choose (if I go the Polarie or Skytracker route)
-When I get back to Cincinnati, there is a lot of light pollution but I'll also do most of my future imaging from here. I'm relatively clueless as to the efficacy and cost of integrating light pollution filters onto Pentax lenses.

Information about my current gear:

-Manfrotto tripod with integrated (non-removable) ballhead and quick release plate. Has 1/4" and 3/8" threads available. Has no bubble level
-Pentax K-5 II
-Vivitar 13mm f/2.8 (same as Samyang/Rokinon 14mm)
-Pentax 70mm f/2.4

My questions:

-Can any of you compare the pros and cons associated with the Vixen Polarie, iOptron Skytracker, and Pentax GPS module for astrophotography? I've read lots of reviews for all three, but can't nail down the best option for my needs.
-Are there any needed, or simply helpful, accessories that I should have to pair with my current gear? Light pollution filters, tripod heads, etc...
-Should I ditch my current tripod, with its integrated head, in favor of tripod legs that can be fitted with removable heads? I was looking at this Benro Classic

Thank you so much for any help given, as it's much appreciated to get some advice from Pentax users on this daunting foray into AP.
