The K5 was out last Thursday night and caught the witch (Witchhead Nebula IC2118) - which definitely looks like it is named
The Witchhead is a reflexion nebula in the Orion constellation lighted by the star Rigel.

This is the reflection nebula M78 and its dark dust nebulas in the Orion constellation and in the left Corner a piece of the so called Barnard's Loop that surrounds most of the Orion constellation.

M78 by pete_xl, auf Flickr
The image was stacked from 30 Pictures with the K-5 @ ISO 400, 360s exposure tíme each.

I will give some more explanations later here:It's all in the data - let's dig it out....... - Astrophotography - PentaxForums.com

Since the latter part of '16 & mostly so far in '17, haven't had any extended clear skies to do much photon collecting. The brief outings w/ the K3ii have been basically all I've been able to collect, so looked back through some of my old data & found some captured w/the K5ii that I hadn't really worked with, so played around with it. Don't have easy access to the # of sub's & exposure time/ISO settings, but "guessing", probably around 30-50, with some & 800 & some @ 1600, & from 120s-480s, as this is kind of my normal routine on a target like this.

Used the SN8 f/4 w/the BaaderComaCorrector V1, & a LP filter (yet can't know/remember for sure if it was the CLS, or SkyGlow,or?)

Had to crop the field more than normal, as the stack used for the "L" layer was different from the one used for the RGB. It's evident in the upper right and a bit lower, as it was a bit tricky trying to line up the layers.
There are (2) versions. The first is "normal" processing (if one can call it that), in PS6..curves,levels,layers,Annies,Carboni's,GradeX,HLVG..all the "normal behavior" for those like myself to yet be a "Pixsiter" convert.

K5 @ ISO 80 on NGC6888 once more

(cross posted with a similar thread in the AP-Forum)
NGC6888 is called the Crescent Nebula and is an emission nebula in the constellation Swan.

I reedited the NGC6888 data I shot last October with a bit more pp-experience and as another test of the stacking freeware Sequator. The K5 was set to ISO 80(!). Unbelievable what is possible wit that low ISO with the K5! It is against all theory that I read out there.

K5
TS Triplet APO 80/480
17 x 300 s exposure time, ISO 80, F6.0
Stacking with Sequator, PP in Photoshop CC2017, finish in LR CC2015.8

First, sincere congratulations Pete_XL !
I was very sad to spend the rest of my life being the only one to do Astrophotography with the K-5 at ISO 80 !

Not so Unbelievable : the K-5 DR measured at ISO 80 is ~the same~ as the Nikon D600 DR at ISO 100
The (Very) Long Exposure from the K-5 at ISO 80 are the Cleanest RAW files I ever shot !
A 1000 sec Exposure from the K-5 at ISO 80 as is... then Pushed 6 Stops :

This is because the first génération of Digital Astrophotographers mostly used Canon Eos xxD CMos Cameras
Their CMos sensors showed Huge Amount of Noise at Base ISO -vs- almost No Noise at ISO 1600
1st Proof here : each Test = 5 subs stacked ISO 100 vs ISO 1600 Same Night & Sky :
M42 : Eos 20d : 100 iso vs 1600 iso - Nebulae - astronomy photos AstronoMike.net
2nd Proof : Canon CMos are NOT ISOless = you CanNot Push an ISO 100 Raw File :
Test Astro 100 iso vs 1600 iso 30 seconds - Nebulae - astronomy photos AstronoMike.net

More on the Huge Difference from a Canon CMos to... the Sony Exmor CMos in the K-5 :

Yes we'll see us ! But at the moment during the galaxy season I do the most images with my K3ii at ISO 400 and ISO 800. I often intended an own serious test between high/low Iso and the K3ii/K5 but imaging time under the stars is so rare and precious that I use every single second for shooting instead .

So here I am with the K5 again....

This image is from April 2016 and was a test with the Sigma 70-200 on the K5. I never processed it because of the ugly stars (astigmatism!) but why should it mold on the hardisk?

I will try to get the Veil Nebula once more this year with the K3ii and the SMC Pentax-M 200/F4.0 to see the difference.

Managed to get out last night and nabbed M101 the Pinwheel Galaxy. Really my first decent galaxy image, just moved and i think the sky is a bit dark here.

I had the camera modified by Kolari Vision, they removed the hot mirror and put in just clear glass. Then i can just use narrowband filters like using any astro camera. For halpha i extract the red channel and process that, oiii i process the green channel. Then for things like galaxies i have a baader skyglow filter which kind of acts like the cameras old hot mirror.

Thank you for the information. I just saw they offer a service in Europe for Pentax and charge minimum 350$ for the conversion. I'll have to think about it a bit of a while......

very nice Seti_v2
What size filters (diameter) did you use and where did you attach the filters, to the T adapter or the scope focuser. I have the K5 which I don't use to often, and a K01. I see they also convert the k01, I wonder how that would be for astro photography with my 127mm scope. Thanks for the info about Kolari Vision. How long did the conversion take?
