Any news on a new firmware release?

Looking at the last few FW release dates, it looks lie there is about an approximately 2 month release cycle:

1.01 - November 19
1.02 - January 4
1.03 - March 9

If this pattern holds, we should be expecting 1.04 to appear any time now.

Has anyone with contacts at Pentax heard anything about a new FW? And if so, have you heard of any features we can expect?

I think the frequency of releases was due to necessary bug fixes.
What do you think is missing/needs fixing?

I'm 100% with Wheatfield on this one. The first three firmware releases addressed specific issues about the K-5. I wouldn't expect another firmware release in the near future, nor is it certain that there will be another firmware release at all. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if there was a release or two somewhere down the road.

No one said never (in fact I said I think they'll be 1-2 more releases)

I just contend that Pentax isn't going to release a new firmware version every couple of months just for the sake of releasing one. Nor do I think they will continually release new updates just to add more features to the K-5.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for firmware updates that both fix and add to the camera I already own

Ah no worries, I was just looking for a good entry line to my cowbell reply.
Anyways, I removed it because it didn't really suite the comment.

However, I'd love to see a few adjustments myself.

1. LV zoom(magnification) in movie mode.
2/ LV zoom/magnify cancel/recall assigned to button *(oh the power)
2. Instant LV wheel zoom(magnification) rather than with touch(perhaps combined?)
3. Highlight protection (why not)
4. Low level NR bypass (while were at it ).

There were a few other things but I can't think of them atm.

All of those features would be useful, and probably not too hard to implement.

That said, I'm still not holding my breath (says the pessimist in me)

Manual controls for video recording could be very useful too.

I want the messed up magenta WB-thing fixed (when doing multiexposure). It can't be right as it is now.

I'm also waiting out on P-TTL adjustment tweaks and LED AF assist customisation with external flash.
It may be a little while yet.

Two notable bugs still exist for me: bounce flash overexposure and playback image rotation.

What about the feezing?

I see that as a big fix prio nr. 1!

I run firmware 1.03, and the freezing continues. Not very often though.

Using the perspective control (the fake tilt/shift feature) results in 100% freezing with my copy of the K5. I have never been able to use that feature.

I have the occasional freeze, too...

But I have to say that flash works nearly flawlessly for me (seems like my Sigma 530 Super is quite immune to bouncing problem) : Be it direct, bounced, or wireless, I saw nothing strange...
I attended a wedding last week-end, and snapped 400 pics in all kind of situations, and nothing...

Only quirk I've found so far is in wireless, when the lens is focused "far" (as reported in the EXIF), then the slave flash underexpose...

Well there is a thread about firmware wishes somewhere here and there are plenty of cowbell's on the list.

Maybe just a little more tweaking on AF is still possible.

So it would be good to have something new and shiney in our camera.

There still is a few fixes that should be addresses plus some additional improvements and features that could be added.

I have two K-5's and the things I saw with the first one over 6,000 expsures were:
1. Magenta coloration while using multi-exposure
2. Playback image rotation
3. One freeze up
