Upgrade to K5, Change my Lens or Switch to CANON/NIKON

Hello Pentaxian,

I have a Pentax K7 with sigma 17-70mm lens. I don't think I'm getting very sharp images. I haven't tried DA or DA* at all. do you guys think it's b/c of the lens and I should try Pentax ones ( I was actually thinking of getting 50-135mm DA*) / should I step up to K5 or should I switch to Nikon and Canon since I don't have a collection of Pentax Lenses to get stuck to one brand? thanks.

My Sigma 17-70mm produces very sharp images. Did you adjust the AF for the lens?

Please post sample images with EXIF so we can see what problem you are facing. As edmund wrote some things can be fixed with lens adjustments.

Funny. I just saw this exact post on Amazon.

I think you should post some unsharp photo here.
Besides do not think this way that your photo can improve signficately just by upgrade camera or change brand.

you shouldn't give up on pentax yet, and i don't think you should just jump into a k5. the k7 is a very capable camera body. Perhaps the focus is off and you should do a micro adjustment of the focal distance.

And you have to at least try out one DA or DA* lens. The beautifully made primes are one of the biggest reasons to stick with Pentax.

It would really help if you posted some photos you're not satisfied with
K-7 and the Sigma 17-70 are a very good combination capable of making fine photos.

I think he means calibrating the AF for that particular lens.
There is an option in the menu that allows for micro-adjustments for auto focus lenses. And so a good start might be to establish if this is either on /off etc.

But perhaps the quickest way to help establish what's going on is to post some images(with EXIF) so people can look at the results and help figure this out.

I will post some portrait I took with a friend of mine in studio. same lighting. she was using Canon 5D markII with Canon 24-105mm lens and mine was Pentax K7 with Sigma 17-70. Significant different comparing RAW files with 100% crop. I still don't think because hers was FF camera, the IQ should be substantially different.

if your looking at 100% crops then the full frame camera will always win.
you should buy a Pentax 645d because its sharper than any full frame camera.

If looking at 100% crops is how you judge a good photo that will be always be the case as to which photo you think is best.

Of course being sharpest at 100% does not make it a good photo and maybe your getting fixated on one variable for no good reason.

umm, just a quick glance can see some are not sharp (but not all of them) which should not be like this. I think they are not focused or perheps the shutter speed is too slow so you get blurry photo.

I looked at five or six of them. A couple are clearly back focused, a couple have motion blur. I didn't see any sharp ones.

Calibrating the AF on your lens might help. Switching brands might help if you get a body and lens that are calibrated together on the first try, but if you get this lens set up properly and control camera shake, you'll get sharp images.
