I'd be more interested in the build date rather than the serial #. We know serials are not in sequential order. It may be asking too much of the OP, but, Mr. OP, if you can download a program called PhotoMe (it's free) and open a raw file you took with the camera the build date will viewable way down in the list of data that appears.

It would be very interesting because Pentax sort of assured us that any bodies built after week 50 of 2010 should be stain free. In fact, if your K5 was built after that and has stains it would be the first instance of that that I can recall. Would you mind doing that?

While you are at it get London Drugs to price match Gastown Photo in Vancouver. Their prices are WAY less. I bought my K-5 for $1199 today...

Looks like stain to me, I though 4xxxxx series was a safe buy - so what's a safe buy now?

My wife's in Japan at the moment and just got the K-5, I got her to take a few test shots and luckily no sensor stain. Speaking of prices, we got it for 95000 yen = $1150 (AUD) including kit lens and extra warranty, so pretty happy with that!

I have two dots that's been there since day one, (I actually tested it in the shop) so it's not the typical string of pearls. I decided that I could live with that, but now they have turned up in a way that I haven't thought of before, in the movies.

Recording a movie in bright light forces the camera to stop down and of course the dots turns up in the middle of the frame. They are especially annoying if the movies involves panning as the specs are the only ting that stays absolutely still.

Plain disaster in the Pentax history that will be never forgotten, market consequences will follow for sure, Pentax has to come up with a new model with improved AF real soon like this summer, or...

London Drugs is usually very, very good about exchanges. Let them know that this is a manufacturer's issue (print out a bulletin from Pentax) and see what happens.

For the same reason Doglover wants you to read your exif data. I''d like to know the build date of that camera. Pentax was supposed to have this issue fixed by late last year, so you either got an old stock chassis or they haven't quite got this problem pinned down.

Mine too

This is interesting - as I have a similar spotting on mine.
I've tried visible dust smear away several times.
When I can I'll post a image.
I've been wondering what to do?
So I shall watch this thread with interest

I got one last week that didn't have stain but did have a really bad stuck pixel that was killing videos. I returned it and got a new one and the new one seems fine. The serial number on the new one is in the 402xxxx range and was manufactured in March of this year.
