K5 - Dead

Oh Dear.

Went for a walkabout, shot 40/50, got home, cuppa tea in the garden, shot 4 or 5 more. Next shot, depressed the shutter .....'Thunk' and ... nothing (WTF ?!?) .... again ...... 'Thunk' .......and again and again - then 'Depleted Battery' icon appears. This 'Thunk' is a very dull noise I haven't heard before.

Strange. OK change the battery ..... 'Thunk' ..... Thunk, Thunk, Thunk .... 'Depleted Battery' icon ....WTF !?!?! Change to 3rd battery .... one 'Thunk' then ..... 'Depleted Battery'.

Camera can not take a shot. Switches on (though metering looks a bit strange 1/8,000 @ f4 ?!?) metering settles down, AF works fine on all 3 batteries.

Any ideas .... suicide doesn't count ?

Sounds like an electronic fault or mirror mechanism problem.
Get it repaired - hopefully it's covered by warranty.

4 months old - warranty not a problem - just having to go back to the K7 whilst the K5 is being repaired. Night & Day.

The good part of your problem is that "Camera can not take a shot" versus if it were a random problem. Service guys will have an easier time repairing or just replacing. Hopefully that means a quicker turnaround time for you.

Your camera has finally given up on you for wanting to stick all those Sigma lenses onto it.

No replacement but it's back after just 7 days and in perfect working order (I hope - seems that way) !

The shop didn't know what the issue was as Pentax didn't say ... just that it was a simple fix.

Welcome to the shutter problems.

Same problem here. What a crock. Many people are having the same problem. I think it is a shutter design flaw.
Hold it with one hand and smack it with your other hand. It works for me. The first time it happened to me. I went thru the same thing you are going thru. Battery ect.
Believe it or not Pentax service in BKK told me about the smack it fix. Ahhhhhhhhhhh

Poor shutter design. For me it cannot hold up to everyday shooting.
I bought two and now the second one is showing the same signs of the first. So deffinately a design flaw i think.

Pro summer prices? I am a little concerned. But stuck with Pentax because of the lenses.
So come on Pentax... Next one is going to be the best... Hope hope

Yes... Here in asia when the K-5 freezes..

We call it the (smack attack)... LOL We all laugh about it over here. But it aint funny when you are shooting rapid with wildlife and the shutter freezes. It is far from being a sports camera.

I just wish Pentax brings out K5+ which fixes all these issues. Everytime I think of buying K5, these problems are holding me back, it will be nightmare to get it serviced or replacement from India due to virtually non-existent Pentax support here.
