Update. Shipped out 1/27. Got it back 2/9. CRIS did good by me.
I shipped mine 2/28. CRIS finished the repair and shipped it back today; I should get it back later in the week. Having the button fall is annoying, but at least it's appears to be getting fixed in a timely manner.

Yeah,at least they seem to be on top of the service side of this issue--perhaps the production side as well.

I just noticed mine missing today. Luckily I had a hunk of wood near-by skinny enough to fit in the hole. I don't really want to send my camera in for a missing button - anyone have luck with Pentax sending them a new one?

This thread is making me paranoid - when I removed a lens last night to try out my new DA 18-135 I held my breath to see if the button would fall off or not. My camera is in the age group where this seems to be more common. Oh well, I love my K-5 and if it happens I will post to vent and send it in. I am hoping that when they do fix them they stay that way.

And I agree - tape will hold it in place, but where is the clip inside you camera and what will it break?
What's the "My camera is in the age group" ?, cameras built between what date range might be affected ?, thanks

More of a ka-bob stick, really, but still a hunk of wood.

Andrew,

I think you may be on to something there... grab some nice oak and some glue and you might have the ultimate "fix".

I had noticed this thread before, and thought to myself "how unlucky could you be?" and then dismissed it from my mind.

However, on a weekend trip to Sydney, at which the K-5 (early model, no stains) was put to good use, with much lens swapping, I noticed that the lens release button was getting a little wobbly, and was reminded of this thread. I haven't searched through all the posts on this thread, so apologies if it's been asked before, but did anyone else notice the button getting wobbly before it fell off?

I know the K-5 takes great photos, but seriously, a $1,200 camera that has high potential for having to be sent in for repairs for multiple known issues!

OTOH, I'm following the "I swear these things are indestructible." thread, too.
My sense is that the K-5 manufacturing issues have been addressed.

I think just because it has an alloy body and weather sealed and is a weighty camera people just think its automaticly going to be on par with cameras like the Olympus E5 etc.
Wouldnt pentax look good if they sent you a brand new camera with love n kisses though ! Except everyone would then be knocking buttons off lol

Dammit! my $%^ button fell off today! Who knows when or where it happened. It is GONE!
on top of that, i was out in the field and could not find anything small enough to fit in there so i ended up shooting the whole outing with the 70-200.

Now I got paranoid, and congruent with my "black tape over every label" project, I stuck a inch long strip of tape from the SR logo around the curves and to the release button.
I am thinking this long tape will have more (and hopefully enough) tack to hold the button if it decides to fly off. I didn't see a way of sticking just a little tape to cover the button and have enough hold on the sides.
