Sports lens for Pentax K-5?!?!?!

Hello! Thanks for all the support and insight on the last post!

I bring forth yet another dilemma: What is a somewhat cheap sports lens for the Pentax K-5>$600?

I have a partner who uses a Canon for his sports shots, and I was thinking of getting a Canon EF converter for the K-5 to save money.

Suggestions?

Is there a Canon EF to Pentax adapter? AFAIK, the flange focal distance of Pentax is longer than Canon so it will involve correction optics which degrade quality (quite significantly).

About sports it really depends on what kind of sports. The traditional FF sport lens of 70-200 f2.8 can be found on Pentax with Sigma 50-150 f2.8 and Pentax 50-135 f2.8. The former is within your price range, the latter is not.

Thanks! Yeah, I had not really researched a Pentax-Canon converter, so I was unsure of its existence.

I need something that is fast and can zoom to about 4-10x (anywhere in between those two.)

I'll look into those you've suggested!

What kind of sports are you shooting?

The Tamron 28-75 F2.8 would probably be good for indoor/gymnasium sports (~$400 new). I don't have one, but I am looking at getting one for next years basketball season. Another lens I'm looking at for basketball is the Pentax 50-135 F2.8 (~$1,100 new).

For hockey, I use a Sigma 70-200 F2.8, but it would be around $1,000 new. The least expensive 70-200 F2.8 would be the Tamron, which would be around $800 new.

This year I've been using the Sigma 70-200 for softball also, but I used the Pentax 55-300 last year and it works well during sunny days. I've been contemplating getting the Pentax 60-250 F4.0 for softball, but it's not cheap at ~$1,500+ new.

firsts of all it depends what sports you want to shoot. I mostly do surf, so an old 400mm tokina ATX does the job. And with skateboarding I use the 16-25 F4.0

I shoot with 2 manual focus lenses for sports, one being the viv'ee 70~210mm V1 S3 2.8, the other being the viv'ee 85mm 1.4 I just got recently. Of course using MF lenses in sports is extremely tough, pentax makes this a wee bit easier with catch-in-focus.

As Jeremy noted, the Tamron 2.8 28~70 is inexpensive, you may however run into an issue with reach, shooting football (soccer & baseball too), unless the action is on your sideline (up close and personal), the long end of the Tammy may not be enough; for basketball, that lens would indeed do quite well.

A fast 70~200'ish is the best route...

Looks like you are looking at oudoor sports.
Zoom lens choices for sports are pretty limited for in what you get to choose from. Fast lenses are expensive.

-If you are willing and able to carry a big lens:
Sigma or Tamron 70-200 f2.8
-If you prefer something lighter and smaller:
Pentax 50-135 or Sigma 50-150; both are f2.8 lenses
All these are expensive.

I use the 50-135.
-Takes nice pictures.
-not too heavy or big
-sometimes you need the wider end to tell a story.
-Did I say it takes nice pictures?

3 caveats.
-When shooting outdoor sports, you must be willing to live with the shorter focal length. On the other hand sometimes 70mm is too wide...
-AF speed is not that fast;especially for the money.
-An unknown percentage of sdm motors are known to fail, so you would need to purchase extra warranty.

My primary skate rig:

Samyang 8mm FE
Sigma 17~50 2.8
Ptax 35 2.4
Tak 50 1.4
Viv'ee 85 1.4 (works extremely well for the indoor distant shots)

This is extremely tough! I can't find a great lens for the ammount I'm looking at, and I need this by October at the latest!

With the K-5's ISO, would f3.5 be OK for football or soccer?

Great photos! I was soon looking at the Samyang 85mm as well, for it is the best 85mm for the money I hear

A fine lens it is and an absolute winner for the price - if I was to bust the glass out of mine tomorrow and the price jumped up to $500 for this lens, I would not even hesitate on the $500 purchase. I will be purchasing the 35mm 1.4 Samyang soon...

I do hope that 35mm 1.4 comes in handy and lives up to the reputation!

If you need a decent zoom for outdoor sports the Pentax 55-300 would be the best choice since it is offering great price/performance. It offers a good reach for soccer, baseball and football and given the very good high ISO performance of the K5 it is no problem that it ain't the fastest lens available.
There is also a lot of info to be found here https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-k-5-forum/115277-k-5-sports-photography.html

Now that I think about it, the pictures wont ever be blown up above 4x6, so I guess Image quality isn't as much of a priority putting that into consideration!

I Think I might go with the 55-300, or maybe even the Sigma 50-200
