Pentax HDR

As it's so easy to get into Ae bracketing on my K10D and K5 (easier on the K10D with it's dedicated switch) I have been taking bracketed shots wherever I go for a few years.

This is one of my later ones taken at Whitby North Yorkshire on a (very) windy day. Whitby plays host to 'Goths' due to it's association with Bram Stoker and Dracula, so there's always someone to photograph.

Do any other users like HDR as much as I do?

Nicely done! I love it.

I use HDR a lot too, but more to accent certain features. I tend to keep the pictures natural.

I do more photographic one too, the subject lent itself to a more 'severe' treatment. Most of mine look like this

I like the last one best of the three. The fist one is no longer a photography in my eyes, but rather a computer graphic. At fist I thought it was grossly overdone, but after giving it more time I actually like it a little. Almost like a painting! Generally though, I view HDR the same way I view makeup; It looks fantastic when you cant see it's been applied.

What program do you use to merge your bracketed shots into the HDR image? I like the third one the best of the three. The first is a very nice graphic and the composition is excellent IMHO, very dramatic.

Photomatix Pro Robert.

What HDR has done in the Owl shot is even out the very harsh lighting we had that day.

The right hand eye (as we look at it) was in deep shadow to the point you couldn't see detail in the eye, you can use HDR to balance harsh light out it can be used to open out shadows and control bright highlights, here's another example.

It can give a 'wrap around' light effect.

Thanks. I've been trying my hand at it but only with the built-in HDR of my camera. I understand that the Owl shot enhances the image without noticeably altering what we expect to see thereby creating a better picture. I like both aspects of the potential of HDR - the clarifying an image without noticeably altering it and the more dramatic possibilities of creating something that looks like a painting.

Great shots. That looks like the Botanical garders at Broomhill if Im not mistaken. Havnt used the feature on my K-x much as it doesnt really give me good results. Ill have to try harder. Nice 1 mate

It absolutely is the Botanical Gardens - I'm about 200 metres away from it as I type

What software are you using ChrisJ? I always have issues with things that move between frames when I bracket, but hav recently started experimenting with making HDRs from a single RAW - but you don't get as much range, or as clean an image.

It is the Botanical Gdns in Sheffield, I use Photomatix Pro from 3 bracketed shots, mainly handheld (too old to carry a tripod - see my avatar LOL) Very good at aligning images.

Hi Guys,
Thought Id post one I took at the weekend. Its maybe a bit overdone but, I managed to steady the shot well enough with the help of a wall. EVs were fairly acceptable at least
