JohnBee.........You made the day for Otis! Thanks! I won't have to listen to his whining for a while now. Very handsome little fellow you posted, no Canon could ever capture the true nature of a handsome Squirrel......Squirrels worldwide know that!

Best Regards!

I'd have to say no.
Unfortunately, many of the K-5's strengths are not exploited in out of camera JPG.

id say the bottom one is the K-5 because the top has more detail and less colour range making it likely to be the canon sensor.

edit and i was wrong... you'd expect the extra 2 mp image to be sharper though

While the top one has better dynamic range to hint that its the K5, the bottom one has the over saturated and loss of detail in reds that is usual w/ Pentax Jpegs.
Hard to tell, though I'd hope that the top one is the K5.

I was going to be 'humble' and say bottom one K5, but I peeked at the results.

Thanks for sharing.

I'm the OP that Johnbee referred to and in my initial view of the raw images, the Canon was better - more detail and clearer (better edge definition, lower overall noise effect) - hence my post querying the quality of K5 vs. Canon, saying that the Canon blew away the k5 image beyond what I would expect from 12.5% more mp.

Johnbee proved me wrong with some kickass PP work with Raw Therapee, the best raw procesor for demosaicing out there at the moment. One lesson is that K5 images need professional standard PP to get the best out of them but that they can beat the 18mp images from Canon is very encouraging news.

Regards
James

Thanks again James
However, when it comes to Raw development, I am no pro I'm afraid.
Though I used to communicate with a developer for a popular Mac RAW software who I considered a pro. And wow... did he ever know his stuff(very skilled). However, as for me, I'm afraid I am merely a layman.

FTR. I posted the RT settings on DPR for you to look at. And I think after you see that, you too will agree that there wasn't anything special to achieve the results seen here.

There is of course part two(the Photoshop) which consist of a single click color adjustment and perceptual Detail adjustment(creative sharpening). But both are extremely simple so I don't hink they will change much.

Let me know what you think. And most of all if you have any questions I'll be more that happy to expand on the theory behind the workflow(so to speak).
